I vote for three ....it looks unbalanced....it's just about always a good rule to design in threes.

Two would have been good if they were closer together..... get up on a stool and hold up the third one, have someone take a picture of it and see if you like that better. My vote is for three. I like odd numbers too. Whether you decide to keep the two or make it three I think your kitchen is beautiful!

I agree with three, as your peninsula is quite large. I suggest good qulity dimmer switches, as you are increasing the amount of light over the bar, but may want more intimate lighting when you entertain there.

I'd suggest a third. And if like to see them longer.

What is the wattage rating and what type of bulb do you plan on using (LED, halogen or standard A)? If you have the equivalent of 60+ watts I think you are fine with 2. Do add the dimmer as suggested by previous poster.

Agree with Howell ... 2 is okay, they need to be closer together though.

I have a few comments:

-3 always looks better than 2. The fact that you have 3 chairs further warrants 3.
-It might look a little tight for 3, but you can buy more vertical shades and can change that.
-I realize it is a trend, but all trends are not good in my book. I speak of the clear, industrial light look. Do you really want that light glaring in your eyes when you sit at the counter? Or, do you want a task light that will function better and add more elegance to your space?
-What is the distance btwn the bottom of your shades and top of counter? It s/b about 30". It looks more than that, but it could be because of the beam adding deception.

Here is what I would recommend:

-add a third pendant
-change the shades to something that is more vertical (not bell-shaped) and a translucent or opaque material
-hang lower if you can (but don't go lower than a 28" distance btn bottom of pendant and top of counter

Agree 3 lites are needed. Also a little longer would look better than short and stubby.

The reason they don't feel right, is because they are too far apart, and are a bit high. If you have the third fixture, have someone hold it up, in the center and see what you think. the 2 vs 3 concept for lighting over an island or peninsula does not necessarily apply as the major rule of thumb, as there are so many other factors to consider (i.e. the size of the island/peninsula, the size/style of the fixtures, etc.).

I would like three. Better visual of grouping.

A quick note about our experience: Brigitte and I consistently design between 70-90 kitchens/year (for over 34 years) and have designed thousands of kitchens.....We also design full structural including below-grade foundation plans.....We have 2 Chicagoland locations and a Michigan location which cover the Wisconsin to Indiana borders, N.W. Indiana and S.W. Michigan.....Anyway, keep in mind that the door swing sets the position for the first light so you'll be starting from there.....Doesn't look like repositioning them will be easy with the wood beam.....We vote for just 2.....See a few finished kitchens where we've used 2 or 3 and you'll see what we mean.....On a unique note, see the one with the 2 green glass shades?.....Those are the old "caps" used on telephone poles!.....Hope this helps a bit.....John & Brigitte

Always go with the rule of threes! Or at least that's what I usually do and it seems to work out nicely. I'm honestly not sure why but that amount usually looks better.

Funny thing about the rule of 3. If you dived a work surface by 3, it actually gives you places for 2 lights.

How do they look when the other lights around and behind them are on. My problem is not so much the numbers but the glare - can you get opaque shades?

Definitely three -will give good balance and you have the space.

I don't think the island is long enough for three, if you put another in the middle, they would be too close. I have those lights over my island, three of them, but the island is very long and they are spaced further apart.

As of right now, I am going to remain with 2, my original design. I think 3 would look great if I had just an extra half foot of length. I also don't want to get too busy. I have to let everyone know, there is no glare, it only appears that way when I snapped the picture with the flash on. I actually love these glass pendants from PB with 60w Edison bulbs. It helps keep my line of vision clear from kitchen to dining room with no obstruction. I really appreciate everyone's advice on here, thanks!!
