Why blue?

Yes, my question exactly. Why do you want to paint one of the walls in this very attractive room blue, when every other thing in the room is a warm color??

i'd relocate the drapery to the top of the door/window section.

I would not paint an accent wall in this room......it is too small for that. You could consider painting the fireplace mantle.

Maybe nobody should paint an accent wall.... who came up with accent walls anyway?

Not blue, this room is beautiful.....drapes need to go.

Thank you all so much. If the drapes went, what would I do with the windows. Leave them with nothing on them. I don't particularly like the drapes. Someone told me that the room needed them to lift the eye up....l kind of hate them... The wall where the fireplace is just seemed like it needed color...Love hearing your opinions. Thanks.

You have a lovely home! If you want to change the look and feel of the room and update it a bit...my suggestion is to paint all the walls a lighter, neutral gray...a soft gray with maybe a hint of blue. Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paints have lots of great grays.

The gray would work with the warm tans and cool the room overall. Also the gray would pick up the blue in your striped chair and allow you to update the look of your room without spending a fortune. Perhaps new solid colored pillows in grays and various shades of tans and new drapes, but only if affordable.

The room is angular so I like the way the silhouette of your furniture is soft and plush. You might just need a few new accessories...less is more.

lovedecor1, what type drapes would you suggest? Also, I am one who is always changing the pillows around. I presently have different pillows on the sofa than what was in the picture. I am kind of leaning toward possibly painting the mantel, and I have purchased a new mirror in distressed off white. it is an arch window mirror. I don't like the gawdy gold mirror that is there now. Maybe I should do away with painting the accent wall and chalk paint the mirror and mantel. Thanks everyone for listening to my thoughts and for your input.

I would remove drapes. You don't need them.

Accent wall, to me are for huuuuuge spaces, where it is necessary to break things up. Not your case.

I would really love shutters in both the living room and breakfast area.

If you need functional drapes for privacy or light control, then the rod should go at the door lintel level. It will be a pretty serious rod to hold a full set of drapes. Make sure you have space to stack the fabric clear of the glass. But since you have blinds, you probably don't really need drapes. The non-functional drapettes do nothing for the room other than add a fussy feel and since you hate them anyway, I recommend donating them. (I understand that someone told you these drapes would "lift the eye up", but I suggest 90% of Houzzers and 98% of professional decorators on Houzz would tell you not to use these particular drapes.)

So we can advise you properly, can you say what are the top 3 things you don't like about the room, and/or your top 3 goals for changes? Do you want:

* More coziness
* More sophistication
* More seating
* Room for children to play
* A piano
* More light
* More comfort
* Easier maintenance
* Less allergen collection
* Sound dampening
* Better lighting for book club evenings
* Accommodation of your H's football watching friends
* Lots of extra seating for political meetings
* Saltwater fishtank
* A place for people to sit in wet bathing suits????

or whatever your goals are.

Love your post soberg! I have an open concept lake house with a solid wall of windows, no drapes and a place for people to sit in wet bathing suits is actually part of the useage plan....but, no political discussions after more than 2 glasses of wine!

soberg, the drapes are not needed for privacy and light control. They are just there for color, I guess. Without the drapes, would that wall look blah with no color. I agree in that I think they are fussy. I don't like the mirror above the mantel. I am replacing it. I don't particularly like the furniture arrangement, however, that may be difficult to change. Not in love with the bookshelves. Thought about painting them. I would like a room that is cozy, has color, and is decorated French country....

Your focus is on the wrong issue. Paint is not the problem with the FP wall, it is the mirror that is reflecting a "black hole" opposite it. For the blue you're dreaming of, hang a gorgeous large picture that features blue. The other issues with your room are clashing colors (drapes, pillows, sofas) and too much unrelated decor (ie clutter.) If you're going for blue, remove all the autumnal colors (drapes, dried flowers, rusty platters, peachy sofas and chair.) Slipcovers will tackle the seating color easily, and yellow will work nicely as an accent for you (a bit lighter than the little yellow vase on the coffee table.) In the location left of the French doors you can draw the eye up by vertically stacking the three florals that are above the kitchen opening, although something more vibrant would be my choice. Replace the rusty platters with some blue and white ones, and add some blue and yellow shades to replace drapes. For a blue anchor in the room, cover the bar base with beadboard and do it in blue, maybe even as dark as this bathroom.

The wall would look much better without drapes. Now that we know you're looking for cozy French country with color, Houzzers can go to work. This room has so much going for it and just needs some tweaking to be fabulous. Do you have a tole tray that you love? That can be the inspiration piece (color and style) for your upgrades.

decoenthusiaste, I actually have the project 09 photo saved as an inspiration on my pinterest.. I love it. Love the blues in the 12th street project and look of that room. A combination of the two> Ha I kind of like color, as you can tell. My rug inspiration is above this post... Love all of your help...

My sofa is actually more of a tan/gold color....

Notice how neat and uncluttered the 12 th st project is. I would recommend gettting rid o all the plates, stuff on coffee table.

Hi I changed my user name slightly. Regarding drapes... if you paint the walls gray go with a solid ivory or beige in a silk or silk like fabric. If you keep the walls as they are I'd go with solid ivory or a color that blends with whatever color you paint your mantel. Remove some accessories...simplify. If you can take a new photo that would be great!
