Either. Sconces or fixtures will work. Take a look at my Idea book called Bath.

The best make up light is natural light. Using light fixtures, just make sure you are lighting your face on all sides. I like to do 1 pot above above the sink and a sconce on either side of the mirror.

I agree with CID

If budget/space allows use a bar light and sconces. If you are using a bar light make sure it is intended for a down light rather than up light installation (some fixtures can go both ways). Sconces do a great job of illuminating the sides of the face as long as the allowable wattage for the fixture is sufficient.

Creative Innovations - What is a "pot" above the sink? My outer sink room (toilet and shower in adjoining room) that I am planning for my master bath will be 48" long x 63" wide. It will have a 48" long vanity with a single sink. I want to make sure the room is well lit to apply makeup. Would the following be too much light: 1 center ceiling fixture, 2 wall sconces (either side of mirror) and 1 or 2 recessed lights above sink area? Which lights do I tie in together to one switch? Or do I need 3 separate switches?
