Take a look at the quartz based products (Cambria, etc.) that give the look of Carrara marble. That might give you the look you're after, but not have the staining potential.

Marble requires maintenance and fastidious cleaning. So ask yourself if this us how you want to spend your time? If not then the previous posters recommendation of using quartz might be a better choice. Understand that most quartz options come in 3cm slabs, some come in 2 cm or even 1 cm slabs. Some manufactures even offer 'tiles' but not many so ask specific questions about sizing before you fall in love because the cost of The labor required to cut down a slab into tile could be considerable.

We have marble subway tile backslash. Make sure it's sealed properly (any grout needs sealing anyway) and you'll be fine. Love love love ours -- Calacatta with nice veins, not glaring white-white. A marble counter would be a whole other question.

Marble in its natural state is a porous material, but tiles are generally all sealed and protected with many coats of clear finish.. These finishes are normally extremely durable but regardless some can seemingly have the tendency to wear away after time. This is usually because owners use harsh cleaners or excessive abrasives. In a worn state your marble can be susceptible to staining and will need to be re-finished. Additionally it is good to keep in mind that because these finishes usually have a high gloss sheen, light is very reflective off of them. What this means is that every little spec of dirt becomes visible, even the tiniest haze of dust.. And those oil smears that you just didn't spend the extra time to completely scrub out because you thought won't really be noticeable, well they will be...

So what it comes down to in my opinion is this.. Do you wish to spend more time cleaning, and considerably more money now and potentially in the long run for installation, material, and perhaps maintenance.... for the glamorous appeal and pleasing aesthetics of a kitchen clad in marble? If it is worth it to you then go for it! After all its a great feeling being comfortable and happy in your home environment. Especially in a room that you may find yourself in for lengthy periods of time. Not to mention you can't go wrong putting more money into your kitchen..
