If you don't want to spend much money on changing the fireplace you could leave it as is and add decor items to dress it up. Purchase two antique tall cabinets to place on either side. Preferably around 5 feet tall each. They don't have to match but should be approximately the same in size and shape. The color can be natural wood, or antique white or something colorful like teal or mustard yellow.

You can paint or replace the mantle with a thicker one. Preferable a new mantle that is thicker and more interesting.

Buy a tall thin mirror or painting that is approximately 5 feet tall and hang it above the mantle.

This will make your fireplace more interesting and the cabinets on either side will help the scale.
