Can we paint kitchen without changing trim?

We have oak overload in our house. The kitchen/bathroom cabinets, all trim, staircases, etc. are in honey oak. This runs through the basement to the upstairs. I would like to start changing the oak, but we have the feeling that if we change one thing (example the kitchen cabinets) the oak trim will look odd with it. Any ideas of what we can do? Changing all the trim in the whole house would be too expensive right now. Thanks.

You can have white cabinets with wood trim. Search houzz kitchens for examples

LOL Andrea we have nicknamed our home the oak sandwich because it reminds me of the bad 80's acid wash denim on denim look. The pic sam posted looks beautiful. You could even use a color on all or some of your cabinets. A blue/green would look very nice on the bottoms only. I have this pic in my ideabooks somewhere that shows painted doors with oak trim and it looks great. Could be a cost effective way to begin the transformation of your home. I'll try to dig it up for you.

Changing the cabinets (could be painted or replaced) and also painting the stair balusters would help with the "oak overload" feel. Wood millwork and cabinetry doesn't have to "match" everywhere, and will actually look much better when used in moderation. You could also try just painting or staining the cabinet doors a different color.
