Black would look great on this piece, but have you considered simply using a wood finishing oil? If you choose a similar color to the original finish, this antique piece can be used to enhance or create a unique theme in any room of your home! Home Depot or Lowe's provide a variety of colors and finishes.

Nice piece! If you're comfortable with black and know where you'd put the dresser, go for it. It might be a little more interesting, rather than painting the whole thing black, to stain the top with an expresso finish (Varathane has a good line). I know the dresser in the picture is teal, but hopefully you get the picture with the top. Best of luck-- keep us posted!

What is the mirror like? Even if you don't wish to use the mirror at this time do take care not to lose it. There may come a time when you will want it and keeping a piece "intact" keeps your options open. (I love all the cool colors on the pictured pieces, esp. the hot pink one... that's a gutsy move).

Love the one jsreams posted. Is that your style? If it is samd back top and varnish in walnut finish and use Annie Sloan chalk paint on the rest. You can look at her site for hints etc. i use a roller instead of brushes with her paint because i prefer a smoother finish

I like the hardware- a light beige with a shade darker for the drawers. Or any other light/dark color combination. If you want to change the hardware, glass knobs would look good. Save the mirror- you might like it on a different wall and keep the wood color or a distressed look.

black is good,k but check out the different color combinations for furniture that are on pinterest.......maybe even on this site. I usually take the two that I like best and put them side by side to make my decision. LOVE the dresser.

You a also might be able to hang the mirror someplace else...I have used dresser mirrors over a mantel...lovely and very unexpected...

Black goes with everything (as a rule) but color adds a pop.
Don't forget, it's not "forever" can repaint.

Are you selling the piece , you don't say what room/ colours it has to go with.

I was thinking for a bedroom ( olive gray ) . I also have applesauce cake color throughout the rest of the house
