2) Is that your furniture? If not, what is your furniture like?
3) Will you be using a tv in the room?
4) What color do you like?

We certainly can brighten the room, with a few idea.

1) Replace bulbs with LED bulbs
2) Bright pillows and accents
3) A more interesting rug and coffee table
4) Patterned drapes hung higher.
5) Art and mirrors

I like the right cdrdesign pic--light yellow, I think. Visually, if you wanted to create some interest in the TV wall, as long as you were a min. distance away or above from the top of the fireplace, you could create an 'L' shaped mantel, and carry that line around the room in full, or part, as a detail, Your TV and art above the f/p can be raised to accommodate this--the TV appears a little low, given the distance away from the seating. Looks like a nice space to me, especially with these couple of tweeks you are considering. Happy Houzzing.

Are you updating the fireplace? A bright, white stacked stone surround would be a beautiful way to lighten up the room. If you went up the wall that the fireplace is on, from floor to ceiling, it would give a nice accent and texture to the room.
