My vote keep them their awesome.

You could change out the locks for better ones and take them with you when you move. It doesn't hurt to check if the house can be made safer (door handles, locks, hinges, etc), but don't be too anxious, because if someone really wants to come in, they will. Only thing you can do is make it more difficult.

Big on security here, have security doors, window locks, deadlocks,gate locks. Used to have a convicted thief for a neighbour. Said the only thing he couldn't break into was that thick one-way mesh. Here we get discount on insurance for security doors etc. If you have valuables to protect, then do so.

Thanks for the suggestions. Since it's a rental it's a tough call. Never had a problem before but the place tends to rent to singles as it's a small two bedroom. Hate to lose the old charm! Opinions are helpful, thanks again!
