Glass Fronted Kitchen Cabinet

I have a lighted glass fronted cabinet in my new kitchen. It was very pretty and put out a warm light similar to the under-cabinet lighting. However, after the glass shelves were installed, it now puts out a very cool blue-green light in contrast to the rest of the kitchen lighting and looks odd. I know it is because all glass has a green tint and the shelves are quality, very heavy and thick, but I am hoping someone has a solution as to how to get the warm glow back. Purchase thinner glass shelves?

Hello sueworks,
What you might want to do is look at 'Starfire' glass for the shelves from your local glass shop. The reason you are getting that "green glow" is the amount of iron that is in the glass, not an actual green tint. 'Starfire' has an almost imperceptible amount of iron used in its manufacture, and is referred to as optically clear. It is a good deal more expensive than the traditional "plate" glass you currently have, but will go a long way toward diminishing the issue you are having. It is available in thick sizes as well to carry the weight of your beautiful serving pieces.

You might try putting something orange-red on the back of the door where you can't see it. It might have an effect on the color of the reflected light.

The span is too large for thinner glass, unless you aren't going to put anything heavier than stuffed animals on them.

Low iron glass could be used, that would reduce the amount of green your seeing. There is also three sided trim, basically u shaped, that can be adhered to the edge of the glass so your not seeing that green line.

I have starfire glass in my fully glass enclosed shower...clearer and slightly more blue than green

Time to try some new bulbs. There must be a more yellow lamp you can substitute to help over come the blue green. The star fire glass looks clearer but not enough to make the expense worthwhile until you've tried some bulbs that might alone fix the problem.

I hope Starfire glass is a " safety glass" and will pebble rather than make shards if it is broken!

Yes...it is tempered safety glass. I like to familiarize myself with products before using and/ or recommending.

It's actually a really great product I would recommend in applications like these. The shower looks out onto the Chesapeake and I didn't want to obstruct / alter the view. I think it would help in this situation.

Lowes has lightbulbs with a display showing different tones of light each gives off. Ask an associate if this may warm it up.

I agree with dclostboy. Starphire Ultra Clear Glass is a PPG product "that contains as little as 10% of the iron content of regular glass – allowing it to transmit 91% of light, compared to 83% for regular glass – without the greening effect typically associated with thick glass ." I ask my shower door fabricator to use tempered Starphire to keep the color of the tile or stone within the shower as accurate as possible. Here is a spec sheet
