I think the problem is the lack of contrast in the white shelves of white ceramics. Also, I think too many mirrors are on the mantle. How about taking the two smaller mirrors and hanging them one over the other on the front of the white shelves - in front of the ceramics above the chair?

Hi Lisa. Your dining room has such character and flare from the colors around your table and the built ins with your china collections. I agree with you that the black brick seems a bit harsh and I wonder if it may look softer and blend in better, if it was painted the same soft grey as your wall?

It adds to the glam of your eclectic space. Rather than toning it down, I think I'd continue to be bold; paint backs of the shelves black too. It will really make the collections pop and will unify that end of the room dramatically! I think the armless accent chair is a bit out of place here though - looks too bedroomy with the sleek dining chairs.. What's the window treatment like and where'd you find the great rug. Consider black and red shades for the chandy. I like your direction - please show us more!

Maybe some glam removable wallpaper in the backs of the shelves, since paint is so permanent.

A grey or black (with small silver pattern) on the back of the shelves would be lovely.

A charcoal gray would be better than the black. Maybe add some art instead of all the mirrors. Here's one that came from etsy.com

I really like your china display shelves. I had another look and wondered if switching the position of the red toned china with the white china that is directly left of the fireplace, breaking up the expanse of the white china and bringing the red tones more front and centered. This china would look awesome behind that chair with the red cushion. Great colors you have going on in your dining room and choice of materials for a vibrant eclectic style.
