Why would you have a desk when all you need is a tray? (that's what my other half uses.)

Your picture made me think though... when our kids were growing up, it was especially common to furnish at least the kids' bedrooms with a desk. But, our kids' desks just accumulated junk, and never were their preferred workspace anyhow. They used a "homework office" in the family room, which was good because we could keep an eye on the computer usage. But now, with laptops being the norm, a "desk" is portable and paperless. A physical desk is not really necessary for kids, or for anyone, anymore.

rredpenn - I have to disagree with you in one respect - BACK HEALTH. I can see a lot of kids in 20 years time with all sorts of issues.

I have a desk, but that is to hold perfumes and some jewelry in the drawer. I wouldn't bring work related stuff in the bedroom. I have enough of it in the office. In the photo, there are no perfumes or the lamp, but it has some now.

Mine works both as a laptop desk and a writing table if I pull out the extension part of the table... really beautiful. I have it in my room, hubby has his in his den along with some sports stuff. I enjoy writing at mine as I am a writer and I run the house bills from here too. It is quiet so I concentrate. It doesn't have load of paper work on it, that is hidden away and easily accessible if I want them.

Neutral ... if you are limited on space, it can work and as your photo proves, look great!

I also have a secretary in my bedroom, though I use it mostly for displaying antique books and enjoy looking at it. Before the days of computers I used it for all of my bill paying and correspondence, but boy has the world changed! And yes, like Mark I still always write handwritten thank-yous!

I had to as needed spare room for au pair.....and it's awful. I never feel switched off from work!! Plus also I admit my desk is of the genius at work variety ie do to touch it as it's chaotic order....

We have just bought a house 42 years old, so will be in reno mode for a while. We plan on converting the small master with the bedroom next to it. We plan to combine our office in a part of the master with the closet space as the room divider so the desk won't be seen from the bed. It's in my head now to draw it out.

Currently I don't have a desk in my bedroom, but I must say it's a great idea to have one.

We have a rather large desk in our bedroom. Not my idea, my husband is an I.T. engineer and likes to surrounded by his tech. I cant stand it, but until one of our grown up sons eventually moves out, Im stuck with it.

I think it depends if you have another room for a desk, or not.

Well, I have a cabinet style GQF incubator in my bedroom, so I don't see a problem with a desk! ;)

The master was big enough to have a nice old oak library table (i.e., open below so it doesn't feel heavy) in a corner for my computer. It's partially screened by my armoire that sits next to it. It is positioned with a window in front of me and another double window to my right. (this area was intended for a sitting space in the master). I love this space. Keeping it neat and clutter free (storage in armoire for printer, paper, necessary files) keeps it looking just fine and not office-y. Photos on the wall and a small Orient Express brass lamp keep it a personal space. Oh, and it occasionally gets used as my makeup vanity when needed.

Yes, most people toady have a computer so a desk in the bedroom would come in handy.

A bedroom in my house is for whatever I want it to be. I wish I had space so that I could install a stripper pole. Is that too much to share. LOL

armygirl, my cousin installed one right by her front door. It has an anchor in the ceiling, but it totally removable, so it didn't mess w/ her decor at all, and unless you notice the anchor or ask, you'd never know she had one.

Have desk in bedroom. Rolltop, no clutter, good place to keep important papers. Don't work at it much. Doesn't bother me in bedroom but would move for more space in bedroom if I could.

I voted yes, but it's really dependent on the rest of the house I think, and the space available to you. When I finally move in to the house I'm building, I'll have a spare room upstairs that I intend to use as an office space for the time being, so I'll try to keep my desk-work to that room. Considering that, I think I would choose a vanity-type piece over a desk in my bedroom for now. But it is super convenient if you don't have an office or office-nook elsewhere in your home!

I fought with this same question. I've decided who really cares? If it's working for you then go for it. My desk ended up right in the middle of the living area and it's the best place for it right now. My TV, kitchen, laundry, great view, are all right here as I look at Houzz!

I think it's a great idea to have a desk in a kid's bedroom so that they can do homework. I love the idea of having an office if you have an extra room for it.

My bedroom is huge--really, you could have two queen beds in there and a few dressers and still have plenty of space to walk. Given that, I say yes, a desk works--as long as you have the space for it. Once you have to start cramming it into the corner or having to negotiate how you will get around it, the answer is no.

We have a secretary/desk in our bedroom and we use it often. Our bedroom is larger than normal with a livingroom on one side and the bedroom on the other so for us it's too much space to waste just to go to sleep in. We make all our rooms in our home as multifunctional as we can. To us that just makes sense.

I don't want my desk with all my business (bills to pay, manuscript of that novel I always wanted to write, correspondence, etc.) out where visitors can see and snoop. If I had the space, I'd set up an office for myself in a separate room. As it is, putting my desk in my bedroom is the only option at my new condo. Right now my plan is to have the computer desk to the right of the window, and create a work-surface under the window that can be used as a writing desk, file cabinets for legal documents, and general work surface if I need to pull out my sewing machine, or assemble a bird house or puzzle or whatever. I'm always much more organized when I have the space set up for what I actually do, not what I wish life was like.

I like a desk piece that I use as a combo vanity, and lightweight use as a desk - but not my "work" desk.

Ideally the desk should be in an office room, but it could work in the den/family room as well. I have never liked having desks in bedrooms.

I’ve always done work while sitting in bed watching tv. Never have had any issues sleeping. Am currently awaiting a gorgeous dressing table which will be used as my vanity and my work space when I’m in serious work mode which is about once a month. The mirror lays flat which will be perfect as my work space. Not sure what all the air circulation and affecting of sleep is about cause I’ve never had that problem. I guess to each his own...

My daughter has a temporary desk while we clear of her desk that is being redone. So mostly gets a lot of use, though there are times when she doesn't need it.

Love a nice writing desk which can multitask as a bedside table, vanity, spot for mending, knitting and needlework, or a desk. When lying in bed, I'm not staring at it, so regardless of how it's used, there are no distractions to keep me from sleeping. It provides plenty of room for a lamp, book, notepaper and pen, or opening up a laptop for Facetime with family and friends. A pretty orchid adds color and a bit of life to the space.

Ideally, a bedroom "desk" would be for personal use vs. work at home. I'd never do it if sleep issues were affecting my life. In today's environment where many no longer go into the office, I'd want a separate room for work, if at all possible. Yet I'd rather have a desk tucked away in the bedroom (and shut down at the end of business hours) than a commercial workspace in my kitchen, dining, or living room. Trying to have family time with someone else is on a Zoom call just doesn't work.

I think a desk in your bedroom is a good idea, especially if you can’t have a dedicated room for an office. I have a dedicated office room; and don’t need a desk in my bedroom. I personally like the idea of my bedroom being an area of relaxation.

I used to have my desk in my bedroom at my old house because the room got lots of sun and light and overlooked the garden so was very peaceful and it kept the rest of the house free of clutter. The only problem I had was the bed aways looked too inviting, and the nanna naps started taking over.
