Should I stain or paint it all black?

I hate the finish and white paint currently on our stairs. Should I paint or stain it all black? I would also like to put white wainscoting on the stair walls also eventually..... Can carpet be removed from wood floor stairs and the steps repaired so they can be stained black? Should I remove the carpet or leave it?

Remove carpet, stain it all black

Leave carpet, leave steps current finish, but paint or stain the rest.

The white is a distractment...showing up to much. Tone it down

I the carpeting just a runner on top of wooden treads or are the visible treads all the hardwood there is on each step?

Go off white on the rails or have it match the walls maybe? Not sure black is a good idea assuming you have a traditional decor/house (unless you go wrought iron like this

If you're going to add white wainscot I would keep the spindles white. You could either restain the bannister and treads or paint black. This photo has a combo of both. If you search houzz entries for black and white staircase you can see if you like that look.

@sam0705 that pic is the reason I want to paint it black! I fell in love with that pic, I also want to paint the interior doors black. Now that I have looked at the pic again, the stairs are a light stain similar to mine and look fine!!! Maybe I will do mine exactly like this pic!! Thank you!!!!!!!

Go for it. My friend has black interior doors, in a lake home, no less, and the are beautiful.
Surprised this trend hasn't taken off more.
