Action Item: Throw away all your unmatched Tupperware and food storage

If you are anything like me, you accumulate lots of different food storage containers during the year. Inevitably pieces are lost or damaged, yet we always seem to keep the remaining part of the set, don't we? (Is it just me?)

Here's an action item as we get ready for the holiday season and all the cooking it entails.

Go throw away all your unmatched Tupperware or other food storage containers and then report back. Let's hear how much there was, what you did and how much space you reclaimed in your cupboards!

DO NOT JUST THROW IT AWAY!!!

Why not donate it to someone who will put it to use? Or recycle it? Or use it for other storage. Seems very wasteful and 'unthankful'.

I feel we think it's like mismatched socks - hope the missing half will turn up.

@Robin You're right! If someone else can use them, that's a great solution.

@Joanne I totally hear you! I once lost one of my favorite shoes and kept it FOREVER until I finally gave up and threw away the match. Guess what I found about two weeks later? :)

In Australia, Tupperware will replace the lids

I got rid of a lot of plastic food storage containers when there was all the hoopla about BPA. I did donate it all, btw. I replaced everything with glass, Pyrex, Snapware, etc. and I like it so much better. Even replaced mixing bowls. I confess I still have some really old Tupperware pieces (gold) but eventually would like to replace them as well for new.

Tupperware has a limited lifetime warranty for replacement. I have a friend who has had several lids replaced free of charge. As for me, I prefer glass or Pyrex. Food will chill faster in glass and I just think both food and drink taste better from glass containers. If someone brings me food in plastic, I transfer it to a glass container and recycle the plastic.

I cleaned out my "Tupperware" cabinet when I put my previous home up for sale. I filled 2/3 of my huge recycling bin! all I kept was what went together, could stack neatly, etc. Now I have about 1/3 of a corner lazy Susan shelf of containers. I have plenty. I have no idea what I was doing with all those containers. Plus everything I have now is BPA free. When someone leaves a container here, I recycle it. I refuse to feel guilty about wasting it and junk up my kitchen.

I am so with you prairiegourmet. Doesn't everything taste better in glass, too? I also got rid of all my ceramic mugs and bought Libbey mugs and just love them. And made in USA!

It is amazing how these tupperware and other plastic containers seem to procreate on their own. I got rid of all of them, use nothing but glass now and don't keep many of them either. I do like old canning jars for beans, nuts, pasta and small items.

I only buy the glass containers now, such as Pyrex or similar. Recyclable, clean out easily, don't leech chemicals, don't stain or absorb smell, and if you lose the top the bottom still works great as a heat proof bowl. Haven't purchased storage containers in years!

I save a lot of nice plastic containers that came free when food was stored in them at purchase. I don't really buy Tupperware, although I think I've had 2 or 3 items over the years.
At one point I was overloaded with the plastic containers I was saving that my husband the lunch meat came in that my husband was buying. I almost threw them out, but decided to keep them for another couple months just in case.
I finally found a use for many of them recently to store all the individual hooks, screws, brackets in their own container so next time I'm framing my artwork for shows, I have a nice organized drawer with the clear boxes with all my components ready to grab :D
Also set aside some to bring on weekends to put cereal or snacks for art festivals. Have even used them to store my curtain hooks that I also use to hang my artwork on booth walls. Used another transport a stack of my business cards instead of a flimsy cardboard one they came in when I purchased them :))
I also use them for small left overs.
Finally after years of saving all different containers, the uses for them are starting to present themselves :)
If I have lids and not the bottoms, I double check first to see if those lids also fit my other containers, if so, I keep them as extras in case one cracks. If they don't fit, then they end up in the recycling bin for Friday pickup :)

Are the cupboards looking more organized? How did we do?

I think I did fairly well after getting rid of unwanted items. Not picture worthy but everything is always in the same places that it is supposed to be. Now if I can just train a couple of people who live here to put the two colanders exactly where they go I would be golden!

I read somewhere about a block-wide "container party" someone threw. Everyone brought their mis-matched bottoms and tops and many found replacements from others' mismatched collections. Sounded like a good idea.

I got rid of almost all the Tupperware when we downsized into this apartment 6 years ago. One left - the one that holds the popcorn. I am replacing plastic food containers with glass containers as I find them at thrift stores as I don't want the chemicals leaching into my food. But I do re-use nice ones from food for my scrapbooking embellishments.
