When I was a kid, my family built a new house. My Dad built an entire wall in the living room out of rocks. He made a hidey hole behind one of the rocks, just with a large tin in it, and if you knew, you could just pull out the right rock, and voila. It would take a lot of rock pulling to find it if you didn't know!

I found that if I hid things behind the cleaning supplies the SO's teenagers would never find them :)

I used to use the cereal box when the kids were little. But my husband was worse than the kids. Now I hide goodies in the freezer in a brown paper bag. No one has ever found it.

RRRRRick where do you find those houses? We have redone or gutted quite a few houses and never found anything of value. :(

We lived in foreign countries while my husband was a flight engineer. I hid cash in my athletic sox so I would always have access to cash if he was away on a long mission. In Saudi Arabia banking was not available for women to access easily in our area. Credit cards were not used locally.
I use to do the same when flying commercial, before complete inspections & unlocked luggage became the norm.
Back in the US I keep candy near the ironing board. No one ever gets close to the ironing but me.

This is going to sound really bad, but....I hide bottles of Raspberry Shock Top in my rain boots at the back of my closet. If I leave them in the fridge my adult children always drink them.

My tweenie dachshund hides ALL of the rawhide chews from my mini dachshund between the pillows on my bed because the mini can't get up there. She's mean.

shawnimota, off topic but I have to tell you my tweeny female doxie is a pistol. She totally takes everything she can get her spiky little teeth around (toys especially) from our sweet mini. Anyway, I have a friend who used to hide bottles in the bird feeder during his drinking days. (He was the feeder so I guess it worked for him.) I am currently hiding the once a year peppermint white chocolate kisses in my closet corner or in my mouth.

Kitchen drawer in the toe kick space under the cabinets. Figure out which cabinet you will use to store your pots and pans. Have your carpenter add a drawer where the toe kick is. Since it is under the pots and pans, metal detectors won't alert anyone to it. The short drawer is deep enough for silver flatware, and lots of jewelry. I guess you could hide your stash of chocolate there as well.

Hide cookies and treats in the freezer, in a container with a big SOUP label :)

Years ago I made fun of MIL for hiding jewelry under wall-to-wall carpet she pulled up and smashed back down. They had a burglar come in and robbed them but the jewelry under the carpet was safe. We quit making fun of her. ;)

in my previous house, I used to keep beers / can drinks under the kitchen cabinets in the kick space area, so they would keep cool on the concrete flooring there, and so the babysitters wouldn't clear us out !!!

My husband always gets nice chocolate to put in our Christmas stockings, I don't eat mine as quickly as everyone else does, so I hide it in my glass doored kitchen cabinets, if they are flat, you can't see them above the door frame and the glass is seeded/bubbled. That way when my mother is around for the holiday weeks, my chocolate won't disappear. The problem is, I always forget, and have to clean out the last years chocolate, to put in the next batch. Maybe I should just share, but its mine!!!! :)

Teemess, the burglar who hit my home looked everywhere. Every door was opened, every drawer was pulled completely out and turned upside down, all cushions, pillows, mattresses were picked up and thrown around. If they couldn't figure out how the latch worked, they smashed it open (an antique doll trunk and a Chinese puzzle box) if the door was locked, they tried removing the knob and when that didn't unlock it they took an axe from my camping gear and chopped their way through. They were obviously searching for drugs or something small because all the small boxes and tins I collect had been opened. My two jewellery boxes had been dumped out on the floor and the contents mixed with those of my dresser drawers. I only keep costume jewelry in the house but they took every piece that looked valuable. They pulled everything out of the medicine cabinet and chipped the porcelain on the sink below it.

My wife hides my sons granola bars (that's all he pretty much eats) in the ottoman in the living room that we use 3 times a year.

I have a cut out in the back of my clothes closet with a safe for valuables. For all would be robbers - the safe is bolted to the house frame. Bring chain saws and acetylene torches to remove it.

The snack stash goes in my underwear drawer - no way in the world my two teenage boys would go near my undie drawer!

I'll tell you where burglars DON'T look and that is books. I remember when the looting was going on in New Orleans after Katrina and everyone got hit but the bookstores. They were untouched. Anyway, I have thousands of books in shelving all over the house so I use several hollowed out books. You would have to pick up each book and flip through it to find something and nobody is going to do that. I also have a small safe that I keep in the bottom of a book bag. I hide the chocolate in a drawer under clothes. I have fake rocks for outdoor keys (I live in the desert with no grass so you'd have to know exactly which rock), and in past houses, I have had false electrical plugs over hollowed compartments, empty stairs and baseboards, and a complete hidden room in one house.

Belahn is right. I was surprised that with all the damage the burglar did at my place, none of my multiple bookshelves appeared to have been touched. But when I mentioned it to the police detective, he was not surprised at all. He just shook his head and said they weren't after books.

forty years ago when I married, my husband and I were ready to depart on our honeymoon but didn't know what to do with all the cash (several thousand dollars) we received for our wedding. Banks were closed and trusted family and friends were too far away to get to before we had to leave so I came up with the idea of hiding the bills and cash in two Simplicity sewing pattern books. Back then fabric stores would let you buy their big outdated pattern books for a dollar or two and since I loved sewing I always had a couple on hand. I laboriously placed one or two bills or checks per page making sure that when the books were closed, they would look as normal (unstuffed) as possible. I placed the books on a shelf in our closet, stashed some neatly folded fabric and sewing notions on top and then left for our honeymoon. When we returned we were horrified to learn that workmen had been in and out of our apartment and specifically in our bedroom for several days repairing damage from a leak from an upstairs apartment My husband and I looked at each other and ran to the closet to check if our money was still there. Thankfully it was and the money went to the bank immediately! Thank you Simplicity!
Now I generally keep money in the bank but always have a hundred or two at my home for emergencies. I took an old, clean jar, filled it halfway with loose popcorn, rolled several bills up and stuck them into a 5 " piece of a wide plastic drinking straw from an old water bottle. I then nestled the straw with the money down into the middle of the popcorn jar, filled the rest of the jar with popcorn and then put it in my pantry. It just looks like a jar of popcorn! With 4 kids in the house I had to have a good hiding place. I always put treats in a coffee can in the freezer or if it could not be frozen just in the can. Now the kids are gone and I hide the treats from the husband. No one has ever figured it out.

When I visited my gramma, she ALWAYS had goodies for us kids, in...the 3rd drawer down, (in kitchen). As a Mom, I put the goodies in ...the 3rd drawer down...as a gramma, my g-kids know that they can go straight to the 3rd drawer down for a treat...I have healthy "Kind" bars, peppermints, small candy bars....no longer do I stock it w/Hostess, since they don't come as often. No reason to hide the "good stuff" in our house w/just the 2 of us.

My husband used to hide candy from our kids in his underwear drawer, amongst all his tidy whites. Seriously...***shudders over the memory****

@Debbie YES, my mom also has a stash in a 3rd-drawer-down spot, and my kids hit it when they are looking for something good. haha Chocolate was a staple in my pantry, so my kids were used to it and never messed with it much when they were growing up. Never did have a hiding spot for food as an adult, although I'd have to hide my pistachio nuts from my dad when I was a kid. :-)

My wife's mother use to hide chocolate in the vegetable crisper in the fridge, she knew her husband didn't look in there. As for money I knew a guy when I was younger who us to put all his loose change into 10 litre water coolers (blue insulated plastic bottles), anyway his house was broken into while he was at work and there was nothing stolen of value because he had nothing. What they missed was the 10 to 12 water bottles full of loose change on the floor

I am loving these tips and ideas! I am told that the freezer is a fairly safe place to keep things from burning in case of fire so I keep a few emergency bills tucked into a bag of broccoli. I also keep a few things tucked into the pockets of some old jeans that are stacked in my spare closet. I've never been robbed (knock on wood) so I don't know if these are truly burglar-safe. Love the book idea-- those old textbooks that I have held onto may become handy after all.

We were taking care of a neighbors house, next door, at Xmas. Xmas eve we had a thick "London" fog, tho' we live in North Florida, USA. Thieves broke in, used pillow cases to steal valuables, & yes, they were in the freezer. We found a steak on the den rug, other evidence in the yard. The fog allowed them free rein of the property , we couldn't see a thing from our house. If a thief wants in, he can get in & find everything if he is determined and has time.

Now, ssgtkitty, London fog disappeared about 90 years ago! I spent 23 years in London and rarely saw a London Fog (caused by fog and coal dust in the air). And then this company starts up called "London Fog"..... How dare they insult London!

air vents are the best cops and federal agents never look there. lol!

Years ago, I read a story about an elderly couple who was sent on an extended cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary by all of their grown children. While the couple was vacationing, the kids renovated their parents' house - new carpeting, paint, furniture, etc - in order to surprise their parents when they got back from their trip. When the couple arrived back home, they were so happy and thrilled to see all of the improvements to their house. That is until they noticed that their old mattress had been replaced with a new one. "Where's our old mattress?" they exclaimed. Much to their horror, they were told that the old bed had been disposed of..... especially since they had kept their life savings of cash inside a secret pocket inside the mattress. That story has stayed with me all of these years. I can only imagine the tone of the room when their children found out what they had inadvertently done.

Our neighbor, Bill, just passed away. He was such a hoarder but very personable. We miss him. His sister went thru every book, magazine, etc. before throwing them away because he didn't trust banks and they knew that about him. Rumor had it, that he stashed his money in these items.

kookabura1 Sorry, but you missed one around Jamn/Feb.1957. As an aircrew member we were stranded for a week. I tried going outside, but couldn't see a thing, not even my hands. I'm aware London fogs are rare now, just using the phrase as a descriptive situation. Sorry if I insulted all the Londoners.

I hide some of my jewelry in the freezer. Whenever I buy a good piece of jewelry, I always ask if it freezes well. You should see some of the looks I get!

I was robbed once. I was surprised to see a lot of frozen food melting on the floor. The police officer told me it is one of the most common hiding places and burglars almost always check it. I was very luckily though. My diamond was loose and I had it in my jewelry box till I could get it fixed. After a couple of days I put it in a ring box and put it inside a sock. He did search the sock drawer but missed my diamond.

Yes, I have police officer friends and they said the reason the crook who broke into my house spent so much time on the kitchen was because a lot of people hide money there in freezer, cookie jar, or even in the flour or sugar and that explains the disaster I found when I came home to all the canisters either smashed or dumped out on the floor.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in any of the posts, but this kind of swinging shelf door cold be placed over a bedroom, office or basement door to create a virtual safe room in case you were broken into while home and needed a place to hide while you called police. It would increase the chances the thieves would be caught since they wouldn't even know help was on the way.

We have what we call a "bag of shame" that we keep a secret stash of candy and treats and we hide it in the closet. You'd think it would be to spare the other members of the household, but really it's to make sure no one eats it except mom and dad. :)

I guess the freezer wasn't such a great place to hide things, after all...will have to think of another.

I once watched a cooking show with Sharon Osbourne as a guest. She said, when she was trying to get Ozzie to stop drinking, he always hid a bottle in the oven, because he knew she would never look in there... ;p
When I lived in SE Asia, most transactions were in cash. So....i frequently had to go to the ATM. My bank provided an escort to your car if you got cash from a teller, but if I went to the ATM, I stuffed the money in my bra...funny enough, a very safe place for a lady to put her money... But then I was in Indonesia during the monetary crisis, and a trip to the ATM had me coming out looking like Dolly Parton. That was the end of that!
