I'm having trouble figuring out what I want to do with the walls and the bedding. I want to bring the colors of the frame and the rug. I will match the bedding after that. The walls had a beige before but it just made it look dingy because of the lack of light.

If you intend to keep your rug. Don't go with a stencil in a round design. A little too Twilight Zone-y to me. Cutting Edge Stencils is my favorite site for stencils. Wall decals are another option. Search wall decals here on Houzz for some great ideas. You do not necessarily have to go with a very light paint. Just go with one that won't be too dark or too bright. I would suggest you determine your style of bedding and let that tell you which direction to go with finishing the rest of the room. Stay away from busy designs, because of your rug design. A color blocked style with solid panels in neutral colors if you go with a more colorful wall and the opposite if you choose a light neutral wall.

An arc light with multiple arms can let you keep some of your floor. You may find you want to replace your bedside lamp with an arc lamp and move the bedside lamp to another spot.

Painting a dark room a light color never really works. As you say, it usually just comes off looking dingy or weak. Rather than trying to fight the lack of light, make it cozy using a medium tone, and as I said, paint the whole room the same color and if you use a stencil, make that the lighter color. As happyasaclam says, because you are keeping the rug, select your bedding first. This will go 90% of the way in determining your palette and it will be MUCH easier to select a wall color to match your bedding that vice versa. Choose something that has your rug color(s) in it and a graphic, not fussy, pattern (actually similar to your existing) or a solid. I can't really tell what color the rug is - is it a color or just a dark gray? If it's a dark gray, how about going with a lighter gray on the walls and then finding bright solid bedding? Or, stay monochromatic with the bedding and bring the accent in in throw pillows, etc. Picking this out will give you a better place to start.

How about something like this (if it's the right color with the rug) and then use, for instance, bright coral pillows if you want to bring in an accent color (or whatever color - I'm just using that for example) You could upholster your settee in a stripe.

Wow! Some really great ideas in this thread. I like the idea of cozy since I white and bold colors don't work in this space. The rug is a navy blue and beige. I like the idea of keeping with this palette and adding pops of color with the coral which I kind of have going on with my poorly arranged frames.

OR, you could use the navy as your accent and concentrate on the coral (and beige tone) as your main color. I think I like this because it brightens the palette.

Remove all pic from behind bed. Paint a Sea Salt by Ben Moore. All walls the same, no accent in a small room. Like rug , but push under bed about 1/3 of the way. Change bedding to a solid, white. Get a throw from,Ikea in a accent color a big bold stripe would work. Add accent color pillows. A peacock, or teal, aqua. Run bed other way. Run out on accent color wall. Use dresser next to it and yr bookcase on other side. I would change out big seat for a small accent chair, in a bold color. Place by door angled. Place a small floor lamp next to it. Add lamp to dresser top and bookcase. Over bed a big sky line picture. Ikea sells cheap. Hang low. On wall where window is a grouping of what you have now. Hang very low group no more than2" apart. To cover wall. Get white panels for window. Ikea sells.

Put basket in closet. Room is small the less clutter the better. Keepitsimple. Use color in accents just a few.

Never put pictures or items that close to ceiling. All come down about 3 ft.

I like Travisinteriors suggestions, except i'm assuming you're on a budget living in NYC, so here's what I'd do: keep the bench (with a reupholstering in mind) and the bedding, but get new nice white shams and a white bedskirt. Choose your accent color and add accent pillows or a throw on the bench to tie in your accent color from the new accent on the bed. It looks like you have a maroon or eggplant in the pics already? I think you might need to replace that - is it paper that's framed? I like that idea, but I think it's going to be hard to make the color look updated, imho. What if you did pink and navy as accents? Would that tie in the rug? I think this room is pretty cool:



Is the window too small to put panels on it with a sheer behind? that might make it look better. For the pictures, scrunch them together a lot more - with almost equal distance between them. You need an updated lamp too, i think. I'm not a huge fan of the rug, to be honest, but I think your accent colors should tie into the darker color on the rug. Is the rug cream? And the bedding cream/green? Kind of hard to tell in these pics sometimes. I'd pull that more under your bed, as travisinteriors suggests. I know what you're going for and I like it! It's hard a lot of the time to try to figure out how to make something pull together. I like the bedding and i like the idea with the pics; I think you can do some minimal things to pull this room together. I look forward to additional pics!

Arrange your art so that it fits within the "footprint" of the settee. Cut out poster board shapes like each one and tape to the wall with painter's tape to get it right. Bottom row should have their lower frames even. After that you can hang them unevenly and interestingly.

Advice I will remember, deco!

In addition, you can poke holes in the paper shapes where the hanging device is, and hammer your nail or other hanger through it, pull the shape off and you're ready to hang 'em!

I came up with an initial design scheme. The grey background is the color I'm thinking about painting the room going with the "cozy" idea that kathryn mentioned earlier. I'm going to make a palette tomorrow using hallie's suggestions. i like the pops of color in the pic you provided.

I love what you've put together, but I think you could do better on the paint. All of the light things disappear into it. Try a little warmer color and see what that does.

Decals could really make your walls pop without being that Blue color! Something like these ones could be cool (or check out other designs at www.beautifulwalldecals.com)

Try happyasaclam's idea of a warmer wall color and see what you think. I think you've done a great job, though!

I like the high contrast of the blue, white, and red as well as the mixture of scale of patterns. Here is a similar design we developed. Yellow might be a nice bold accent.

I agree with halfpint2, and keep us posted with pictures. :) Also, the light beige in the rug could be a nice subtle wall color. You could do the one wall where the bed is going in a slightly darker color. THe Colors of Coral and Navy marriage nicely.

Much better with the bed on the blue wall. Looks so much bigger! The dresser is a little big so close to the bed. Try switching it to the other side of bed and use bookcase for nite stand.

I think overall I would prefer more action on bed or above bed, and less on carpet even though the first two pics I posted above were for what might go with a very active rug. Solids might be good too.

It looks great now that you've moved things. I like the sette but I wish the other furniture was wood. Any chance of some quirky second hand finds? I think that would add warmth and work with navy, beige and coral.

emckenna: That Sasha set reverses to a large red polka dot - did you see that? I think it's fun (although maybe the polka dot background is kind of white as compared to the rug, but I don't know that you're going to find something like this much better without going to a custom fabric). I think it would work, but here is what I would do: not use the shams or at least use plain shams in front of the patterned ones. Add a navy blue throw at the bottom of the bed and/or a navy throw pillow. In essence, let the comforter be all the pattern on the bed. You would have to carefully choose the settee upholstery, too (a small scale, geometric pattern would work with it)

a cocoon- pick a glowing warm candlelit paint colour on the walls soft sea blues for curtains and bedding

How about using this for a bedspread and fold the Sahsa quilt at the bottom - that might be a little quieter but still bring in the pattern. Also, then the shams would look nice at the other end of the bed.

Just a weekend update. I wanted some opinions about the layout before I start hanging up my frames. Also I got the blinds shown below but I have to cut them down which i will be doing tomorrow. They look great with the color of the wood of the settee and the other colors in the room. Thoughts?

The room looks very warm and inviting. Great job! I agree on a curtain, but not the one you had. A light/white sheer pulled to one side and maybe still the addition of a headboard.

I sort of dropped out of this one, but just now looking at yhour picutres. A little surprised that the bedspread is red rather than more of an orange or coral. Are you changing the settee? Put the rug looks amazing, blinds are nice and the color of the wall is very nice!

If you could find a draper panel to match your throw on the bed, it would tie everything together. Good job!

So far, very good adjustments . I would suggest moving the rug under the end of the bed, with a little on each side of the bed and a little at the end of the bed. You need a matching pair of lamps with volume for each side of the bed. Pottery Barn has antique Mercury Glass bases on sale right now. Put some of the books in a basket and slip back into the bookcase, but I really do recommend that you change the bookcase out for a round night table. PB's Willow bedside table may work. Always measure several times before buying anything. Even lamps. Add a black and white small pillow to the sofa. Again, PB's has many pillows that would work. Add a linen pillow in your red tone to the sofa as well. Put the hamper under the light switch. I would actually put the round table by the window and the dresser on the other side of the bed. I like the colours you have chosen and the blind. Still need drape panels. Darling room emckenna!

emckenna, it looks like you need the bookcase for "business" rather than display. One idea that would help to unclutter the look is just to hang a curtain on a tension rod across the front. I think a pattern could work, but I would keep it mostly black with a little bit of white - maybe making a pillow cover for the settee out of the same fabric. The problem with my space is that it needs to be functional while I want it to be cozy and decorative. Due to the lack of space and closet space I need to keep the dresser. perhaps I can do something else with the bookcase? But I;m not sure what that can be. I also have a smaller dresser that has been currently taking up space in my living room during my bedroom transformation. That holds my pajamas, workout clothes, intimates, etc. so i need even more clothes storage. You can see the size of my closet in the pictures, its the space behind the double sliding doors and that is already jam packed with a shoe rack, a full rack of clothes, and miscellaneous storage. I can move my books to my bookcase in my living room. Maybe I can get storage baskets for my bedside bookshelf and put my clothes in there?

I can see your lack of space problem emckenna. That is why I mentioned before about a book case or shelving above the bed. Even if you could purchase a bed that has one built in and side shelves. Those are very functional. And, by staggering your shelving above the bed and putting a few interesting pieces along with photos you draw attention to your nice bed and colors that go with them.

You can purchase different color burlap drawers, and they function with baskets as well. but unless you can put them in the closet, I see little room for them. An ottoman on the end of the bed could hold blankets and throws.

Really, the bookcase is functional and doesn't seem obtrusive. Maybe try moving it under the window, next to the settee (looks like a reading area) and move the dresser to the other side where the bookcase is (not sure if it will look to high and block the bed).

I like the layout of the room. Leave the dresser where it is. You could free up closet space by putting shoe rack on back of door to the room. Wire closet organizer may help create more storage in closet as well. You might be able to add shutters to the bookcase for a more finished look. Does your other dresser (in living room) match this one? And is it larger? You might be able to squeeze one into the closet and use bifold doors in place of the sliding doors. They would give better access to the closet. A headboard would draw attention to the bed more and create some height.

I think the layout of the room is excellent. You have made the most of the space. There are many closet organizing ideas whch will help you a great deal.

I would caution against clothes in baskets, it gets dusty, stuff falls out easily and often bits of clothes show out the top making things look messy. I would suggest instead go with the other solutions people have provided and also consider storage drawers under bed ( maybe too expensive route) or a second dresser to replace bookcase or settee depending what can go elsewhere in your home.

I'm just joining on this now, but, I get the idea that you need more storage in your bedroom and I think what lynnduron is talking about is storage built around the bed like in this photo or something similar.

This is a good idea for your collection of pictures. You could change the arrangement ie: add, delete or rearrange without making a bunch of holes in the wall.
