Hi tgrim. This question has come up a lot on Houzz. I'm guessing a little more than half say definitely real hardwood floors and the other say wood look tile in the case of pets, sand, water. Most say no hardwood in bathrooms. But, here is an article on wood look tiles and at the end is a very good discussion on the pros and cons of each. Read each comment to help you decide. For me, I installed engineered hardwood in 1997 and I'm leaning toward wood look tile throughout with under floor heat. Dogs, kids, wet swimsuits, party people, have made my wood floor have way too much character.:) In any case, because flooring is so important and a big investment, I'd get the best quality you can afford.

P.S. If pets, children, sand, water, isn't an issue, real hardwood floors is hands down the winner. :)
