In general you add 30" to each side of table to allow for guests to sit comfortably and be able to push back without hitting a wall. That said a 36 " table is pretty narrow. You would have room for place settings on each side and not much else like serving dishes. Measure out 36" and set a couple of place settings across from each other. If it works then that's the table for you. You do, however have room for a little wider table based on the formula above.

Agreed with a table that is at least 36" wide. Do you need a side / buffet unit in the dining room as well?

36 is ok and works ok it's just more about the look as i don't want it to look skimpy with 6 chairs. the bigger table is 42 which is better but then the length is 84 which leave me 3 feet on each side.
