It has a lot to do with budget and personal preference. If I had only a choice of tile or vinyl I would choose tile. But, I'd request rectified tile so the grout lines would be a skinny 1/16th inch. It also depends on what other materials you are using. A beautiful granite or quartz counter would look odd with vinyl floor IMO. But, there is also beautiful laminate counters now too, so if budget is an issue it's also an option. Is your foundation wood or concrete slab?

If the only option is between tile and vinyl then definitely tile. We shopped around when we got ready to start our kitchen renovation and ended up finding an 18" x 18" porcelain tile that we really liked at Home Depot and it was only $.99 a sq. ft. Do some shopping and you can find a tile that will be similar in price to vinyl.
