Your cabinets do look great - I'd encourage you to paint the wood trim as well.

As far as a light ficture - Why not select a hanging lantern instead? It doesn't need to be a large one...
...and you could easily supplement your general overhead lighting with under-cabinet LED light strips.

I like the wood strip at the top of the cabinets - it goes with the edge of the counter. I think track lighting would be perfect then you can direct the light where you need it - a 6 ft. length is all you need - with about 5 light heads on it and put some light pucks under the cabinets for task lights . Some puck lights can also go on the tops of the cabinets that will make a huge differance. So far what you have done is great !

Be careful with the lighting. Undercabinet lighting is a great idea, as is track lighting. But your kitchen has neutral floor, counter and backsplash tiling. I'm sure the painted cabinets are very striking against them but some lighting will dull the impact if it doesn't work well with the tile. Hopefully there are some extra tiles left in the garage or basement that you might take with you to sample lighting on. Good job on the cabinetry! I almost see a nice brushed nickel/silver colored light fixture of some sort to contrast subtly with the cabinetry while complementing them as well. That is if you don't go with track lighting.

Hmmm...my cabinets are shaking with fear and confusion as I take a hard look at them wondering how they'd look dressed in black....

This space is crying out for an island (moveable perhaps with a butcher block top) located across from the sink. I would remove the florescent light and hang a pendant light over your new island.

No extra tiles :( They are not what I would have picked, they were already there, so just trying to work with it. I would rather have a solid surface for the counter top. I know that grout will make me crazy. But it is a second home for now.

I think a roll around island is a great idea - don't go too small. You have to have about 42 inches between that and the counters - something with some storage.

I really wish I had room for an island with pendant lighting, but the Floor space is probably 6' between counters. And across from the sink and next to the Refrig. is a double opening that goes into the dining room, (which I have the question about the built ins). I have TONS of storage and would like to put some pull outs in some of the lower cabinets.
I have added two more pictures so you can see the whole kitchen, before it was painted.

Yes, now I see you don't have room for an island and WOW what a change you have made - it looks a lot better with the new paint job. IKEA has some great pull out drawers and storage ideas.But there are hardware stores that have things like that also.IKEA also has an awsome maple cutting board for beside your stove - It kind of hooks on the edge of the counter and is only around the $ 20. dollar price point. Make sure of your measurments to see what will fit.Good Luck!

What did you prime the cabinets with? I'm considering painting a dresser and wonder if the paint will "stick" well. I'm assuming the concept would be similar.

Painting the cabinets and changing the hardware really made a difference, good job! I would go with a multi-directional fixture that matches the hardware finish maybe, and supplement with under cabinet lighting. I found this on Ikea's website, just by way of example:

Deborah, I used Valspor paint with primer. These cabinets were really dry and not much varnish on them. I did give a light sanding, just to make sure it was roughed up a bit. I also painted the chairs in my dining room. They were a Craigslist find and had splattered paint all over the seats. If your dresser has a good finish on it, I would definately give it a good sanding, not to the bear wood, just to get the gloss knocked down. Hope that helps!

KILTZ is a very good primer - I use it all the time. The prep is the most important part of a good lasting finish .

You've done a nice job so far, I would paint out the wood trim in black it will help it blend better, right now it's taking away from your beautiful cabinets you've done. As for lighting I would do a track lighting that you can extend to the size of the room and add some under cabinet lighting. Here is a website that will help you understand what to look for.

hello, love the cabinets in black but you need to paint out those wood trim pieces and the kick plate.......they really just don't go and look out of place. Go for undermount lighting.....in my other house I bought an inexpensive rope lighting , the kind for outdoor christmas decorating and attached it with some little brackets under the cabinets and have the plug end plugged in and hidden behind the coffee pot. cost me 12 dollars!

great idea with the rope lights but we went to lowes and they have these little lights that work on batterys and stick underneath the cabinet . We don't use them much but for early morning and making the coffee they are really nice come in black or white or silver. Love rope light we put them above our cabinets as well and looks so pretty at night or when we have company.
