A runner would help give it some warmth yes as well as protect the wood from all the dirt and debris that gets tracked in the front door. Paint is a must and unless you are married to the white walls just adding color changes the whole look and feel of any space. There are also very narrow cabinet pieces that can be found that can go on one or both walls to make it feel as if someone live there. It is very empty now and the addition of some exotic pieces, the rug, some artwork over the pieces and some color would make an amazing difference! Another thing i have added in entries is coat hall trees or even just a row of hooks up on the wall to hang coats, scarves and hats.

A beautiful console table with a mirror on the right side will give your foyer a welcoming feel. You can place seasonal fresh flowers, family photos, and candles to complete the look! Underneath, you can place baskets for shoes and other storage.

On the left side, a wall mounted coat hook would be the perfect place for your guests to hang their coats and scarves. It wouldn't take up too much space, either! A simple mat at the door will do the trick if you are unsure about a runner.

A runner is a nice idea to warm up the entry way. Have you considered a bench? It is helpful to have a place to sit down for putting on shoes, and it can act as a surface for packages, etc. A console is another really nice option, with a mirror or artwork placed above.
