Could wood stain on buff colored brick replicate that beautiful color?

Do you think a wood stain could replicate the color of the brick? I figured I would be able to lighten or darken the color as I sponge it on as it appears there is a nice variation in the color of this fireplace. Also, wood stain has a similar sheen.
