I am redoing the floors in upstairs bedrooms, hall and the stairs. They are now all carpeted. I wanted hardwoods but I was tols I would have to rip out the underlayment which is Homosote as one cannot attache wood to it and install new plywood subflooring instead and I would have to have all the doors trimmed down as the hardwood would be thicker than carpeting. Not only would the cost be a lot more to do all this, but all family members want carpeting vs. hardwood in their bedrooms. I am trying to come to a happy medium and was ondering if anyone has used laminate flooring in bedrooms and how it is working out. Except for the bath, I have laminate flooring throughout my downstairs as we live right on an ocean beach and a wood floor would be wrecked in no time. I love this flooring as I got a high end laminate and everyone tells me they didn't know it was not real wood until I told them. Would like any comments on using laminate flooring in upstair bedrooms and what should the steps be made of as they are now just unfinished stairs with carpeting? I am thinking wood stairs stained to match the downstairs laminate flooring? Could I use a different color laminate upstairs, and if so, won't the top step look strange if it doesn't match the laminate hallway flooring? Thanks for any suggestions!
