First thing I would do is turn the rug the other way and move the furniture closer to the fireplace. Actually, that's the second thing I'd do. First would be to find a better place for the TV. I'd find it for you, but we seem to be missing a photo of the other side of the room.

Great windows, BTW. I'll bet the view is gorgeous. I probably would not cover those windows. Let the outside come in. It can be your art.

Also, I like that you have your couch and loveseat corner to corner. How about putting the side table in the space between so both can use it?

Yup, either turn the rug or switch the two pieces of furniture. Part of me thinks it might be better for the longer piece to be in front of the larger window??? By moving the side table between the two and putting a lamp on it, there will be room to the right of the fireplace for that olive tree....love that idea!!!

I have tried the rug the other way and it didn't look right at all. The other side of the room is my kitchen, its all open floor plan. I attached the only pic I have that may give you a better idea of the area. I have moved the rug and all the seating a million times and kept coming back to the way it is in the pic. I have to make this furniture work as I bought it just before we knew we were moving so it is brand new. I usually don't struggle with rooms but I really am with this one as far as making it come together and look well decorated.

I think what may be throwing off the look of the rug is that it is too close to the same size as the couch.....and the length of the fireplace, for that matter. Would you want to try switching the couch and the love seat to see what it looks like with the rug size then? Oh, this stuff will totally work here....no worries about that at all!

I actually like your idea of the funky teal ottoman for the space, too.

I would bring in a lighter colored coffee table, lighter teal pillows (yours are too dark to show up against the dark sofa), and add another color in accessories.

Maybe.....I don't think the end table looks right between the two, its pretty big. I think I need the Olive Tree for sure, the rest I am not sold on. I tried the bigger couch by the big window originally and it blocked a lot of the window and you couldn't get behind it at all so I decided it couldn't go there. I had been looking at square end tables but a round one might work, or possibly a round big ottoman. Keep the ideas coming!

I can't see the end able in your photo, but I'm pretty sure I saw one either in a print ad or while combing thru a store (because I remember thinking "that's what the ad must have been referring to!") The only stores I visited yesterday were Home Goods and Lamps Plus, so it might have been one of those. In any case, the ad specifically mentioned that it was designed to fit between two sofas and the table I saw was shaped with a narrower front edge and slightly wider one toward the back. (i.e., Shaped like a wedge.) If you can't find one in a store, you might locate one by googling.

A table helps anchor the furniture and gives a place for a drink or book. Leaving the one beside the love seat adds length to that side of the room without blocking the window.....good point.....and it has a function for the one seated beside it. The couch and the other end of the love seat will need to use the ottoman/coffee table for their table then. A tray will work if you go with cloth. I would suggest a lamp for the end table as it will also be used and add height, which is a plus, too.

Yes window treatment is in order. To give the room a finished feeling. I would go roman shades in a dark gray & a white border. A coffee table square 36" go a color, or a fun animal print, ottoman. To mix it up. Your room lacks interest and color. Pick a color you like. And use around room in accessories. Get a new area rug. 8x10 in a contemporary design using bold color. Art same hang low, it will bring in interest. Ikea has nice things if you like modern. Lamps, rugs, art are all there. West Elm, Z Galleries, both sell great accessories . Ck out TJMax also. Great price. Find interesting pieces that speak to you. Shopping for accessories will make your room. Pier One has great mirrors, pots etc. use pillows with a Ikat, Greek key, chevron prints in them mix it up in size and shape, use yr accent color. Big colors with grays. Peacock, yellow, mustard, teal, orange. You can mix and match colors for more interest too. Shop where you can return. Because you will. T JMax has a great policy. Save yr receipts. Happy shopping.

Your home is nice. Like kitchen and open floor plan. There is some great posters on Houzz that can help with the layout. Are you happy with TV on Firepl? If not maybe a media in reclaimed wood to sit TV on. Go higher chest type. Place next to firepl. You also need end tables. They don't have to match. And if keeping L shape you need one table round between the two sofas. Then one on end by firepl. Get very tall big base lamps. If in the woods. I would suggest a cabin feel to room. Using reclaimed wood. And a theme of mountain cabin. You said you like modern. But after seeing other parts of room, I think rustic would look nice. It's very big now and not hard to find accessories to go with look. Do you need bar stools? Restoration Hardware, would be the place to look, a metal industrial rustic look. Would go well in your home.

In the future don't buy matching pieces. Or a very dark color. More fun to work around color.

Are you saying a live olive tree? I don't know how they grow I side.

I have front feet of couch/love seat on the rug. My mom says I should move them off the rug a bit so there is a bit of wood showing in front of them. Any thoughts? Yes, I saw in a magazine that Olive Trees are a great indoor tree for living areas. Unfortunately in my area we don't have a lot of the fun accessory stores mentioned. I have been checking Gordmans, Pier One, Marshalls, furniture stores and Hobby Lobby often. Tv was all roughed in above fireplace and I have someone coming next week to add speakers in the ceiling. I will add a media cabinet to the right of the fireplace for cords and satellite box then so that area will have sone kind of cabinet. We like the tv above and on the wall, haven't had any problems. I will start adding some color and hunt for a funky ottoman and see if that helps. Roman shades might be great too, hadn't thought of that option.

Do not want to upset Mom, but I like the front feet ON the rug. I am sure it is ok to have some floor showing, too, but that is my personal feeling on rugs and furniture in a space together.
