Beautiful room. Yes, painting the trim would go a long way. If you don't want to do that then light furnishings. I bookmarked these for colors for myself...too dark?

I love the trim...decorate the room and you'll find the trim recedes.

Well, I actually wouldn't want to see the trim painted, but it is an option, lol.

I think some color on the walls will make the trim look totally different.

The slate and lighting suggest Mission or Craftsman style in furnishing. Pick light shades from the backsplash to tie the rooms together.

@handymam any specific color? It's currently a tan/beige color but I'll be painting it something different.. I was thinking some kind if light creme or gray to lighten up the room

@kathleen mk thanks, I'm changing the dining room light and possibly removing the light on top of the fireplace. Also, thinking of changing the fireplace to a stacked stone look instead like this

I like your fireplace and would strongly suggest you piny first and then see how you feel. You might like the fireplace more with the rooms painted and furnished. I like the light grey idea.

I agree with Kathleen to choose a grey from the backsplash.

You have enormous windows that add huge amounts of light and the current colour palette continues the natural feel. If you were to put light semi-transparent window coverings, it could be as effective as paint to add some large scale light diffusing. Costco does in home consultations for window coverings that you can request via their website. What do you love / hate about the space? I refinished our fireplace in multi-coloured slate and chose an orangey gold (Benjamin Moore Richmond Gold) and accents were in Rusty Nail. It really made the fireplace pop and I have cherry stained oak floors and trim, so a little darker than what you have. Have you played on the Sherwin-Williams site? You can upload your pics and " try on " paint colours. Might give you some ideas anyhow.
