I think that zig zag pattern might work. Indian's picture of it looks more gray and Grover's looks more blue.

What does everyone think of the zig zag?

Find your injection of color (it may not be mustard) and your seating. Consider a chaise at the window for more elegance. Your bed is centered on the accent wall, so I'd put the tall chest on the right side wall (under the vent) and the dresser at the foot of the bed with your art piece above it, so you could enjoy it from the bed. Break up the brown with mirrors above the bed or with each bedside table.

Really like your idea of a chaise by the window decoenthusiaste, there is plenty of room for that.

Don't shoot me, but there is a flat screen TV above the long dresser - Husband insisted on that.

There is this other color in the artwork that is a very dark blue/green - it is more green than blue.

Blue/green would be very soothing. I think I'd insist that TV in the "intimacy" room requires a trade out of the fan for an elegant chandelier. Is this chaise the right color?

No, it is much darker blue green.

Would love a chandelier! what chandelier would go with 2 hanging pendants over nightstands? It is a very large, tray ceiling.

Took a couple more pictures of the room. 1st one is a closeup of the teal in the picture and the other is a better shot of the tray ceiling.

I love indianpatti's chevron (zig zag) fabric, BUT: unless the scale of the pattern is appreciably larger or smaller than the modified lattice pattern on the chair, it will be a nightmare of competition. As usual, groveraxle's suggestion of a chaise is a really good one. Let the functional needs dictate your ultimate decision on chairs vs. chaise. The colors and the flow will fall into place once you find a multi-colored fabric you love. It could be for something as minimal as a pillow, but would again, introduce the references for the rest of the palette and fabric mix.

We liked these higher lamps and put on orange flame glass accent shades. The lights came with regular canvas type shades but we wanted glass with ability to direct the light. Just an idea. Good luck!

mouse, a chandelier would be fine, but not with hanging bedside lamps. Three hanging lamps would be too much.

I agree that the zigzag fabric and the geometric chair is too much, the patterns too close and too angular. If you do the zigzag fabric, do a plain chair. I also would suggest an armchair instead of a slipper chair; they're much more comfortable, and if you intend to read or have coffee while watching TV in that chair, you'll want the arms.

That makes sense about too many hanging lights. Maybe I'll get the large artichoke instead of fan and white lamps.

Allright, now I have found another pattern drape for everyone's consideration.

Didn't realize you were doing hanging bedside fixtures. I prefer lamps or wall mounted swing arm lamps. Chandelier is your option, but would be the star of the tray ceiling, so don't compete with the bedside lighting. I really like the chandelier in pic #3 with the tall white lamps.

Giving up on decorating this room as nothing is working as far as drapes/chairs go. Maybe that is why everyone decorates tone on tone (like in pic #3)

The drapes and chair you've posted above do not work together. The patterns are virtually identical and the same size. If you love those drapes, get the plain brown chair. If you love the chair, get plain drapes.

Frankly, the medium-sized, bold pattern on that chair is one of the things that makes this so difficult. It's going to be hard to find another pattern that doesn't compete.

I don't think it matters whether the chair or drapes have pattern. But be sure one does. Color, posters texture, shine... And if your going to replace side lamps with better ones to scale, get your shine in there with the lamps.. Something metallic

Find a fabric you love for curtains. Then go with a plain chair. Key off the curtains to add a third color in your pillows and throws.

I may be the only one who thinks the velvet mustard drapes are a good choice- but I really like them! A gold or bronz-ish silk might work also- It seems finding patterns to go w/ your artwork is an issue, so I would stick w/ solids (definitely add the teal!) & go for different textures for interest.- maybe rattan wing chairs, an area rug etc.

Here is the bed side with your chair and two sets of drapes. IMO, the gold drapes look richer than the mustard.

I'll have to go to West Elm and check out both of these. Your idea for Gold does look nice. But these will be hanging on the tan wall-not the dark brown wall. It may look washed out?

I love the chairs you're considering (pictured in grover's rendering just above)! The drapes look nice too. I think large lamps will make a world of difference in your room. If you make no other changes, please consider much larger bedside lamps (no shorter than 28" tall, I like 30 better). Nothing worse than replacing too small lamps with lamps that are larger, but still too small. I think a drum shade is a good look for your bedside tables and I really like the silver West Elm lamp, but its size is a little bit iffy - it's 28" tall but the shade is only 13.5" in diameter which is on the smallish side. There are lots and lots of lamps out there to choose from - please think about the size/scale carefully before you choose.

I love gray and yellow. My favorite looks are below. I'd go with gold drapes and bring in the mustard in the pillows. I'd also like to see just a bit of rust to pick up on the rust in the art. The window wall was looking flat, so I added a plant.

Here's a lamp from lampsplus that is 30" tall and only $80. It's a nice website for searching as you can drill down by style (I looked at contemporary), size and price. There are hundreds to choose from. Check out the Z Gallerie website too.

Isn't it cool what grover does with those renderings? You're very lucky to have grover in your room! It's always a huge help!

Before you shop for lamps, measure your tables and subtract that # from 58-64 to get your ideal lamp height for the bedside.

mouse, yes gold and silver can go together...just like yellow and gray. You won't know if the gold drapes will look washed out till you hold them up to the wall. And the mustard drapes may be perfect, but my sense is they will be overpowering when you get them in the room. From what I can tell in Photoshop, I think the gold drapes are a bit more subtle and soothing, but the proof will be in the room.

Sounds like you have a local West Elm (lucky you). Go. Make sure you can return the stuff that doesn't work. Buy and try.

The lamp is item #60238 on lampsplus, but look and look and look because there are so many lamps. I love the "rule of thumb" posted by decoenthusiaste for bedside lamp size - very, very helpful!

Sorry, I haven't read all the comments as thoroughly as I should have - are you planning on having an electrician wire for a chandy? Where in the room?

You see how the wall colour is similar to the colour of your furniture? That's what's creating the problem in choosing accent colours. This wall needs to be lighter and then your West Elm finds will look fabulous! It's that simple.

I had a couple friends over and we spent a couple hours trying to figure this out. With all of our Ipads in the room, we held up pics of all the options I liked.

The gray pattern chair just did not look nice with the browns in the room.

Putting our heads together, we came up with the following choices:

Will choose pillows when all arrives.

We will figure out the chandelier and lamps after the curtains and chairs are in place.

If anybody has suggestions on a chandelier and lamps with the following items in the room, I would love to hear about it.

Will post picture of room when it's done.

The lower left of the 2nd set just HAS to work in somewhere as the chair is same color and velvet also.

You don't like the one I chose for the chair - is it a bad match with the drapes?

Yes. It seems not right with the drapery fabric. Since the drapery pattern is a mid-scale bold pattern with lots of movement, I would love to see something much tighter, LR, Set 2, or bolder LL, set 2. The velvet lumbar would be TERRIFIC on the chair(s). If you do two chairs, use the same pillow on each.

Hi pqtmouse! I am having the same issues with a a new house and dark brown walls with dark furniture. The previous owners had off white furniture and it looked really good, but when my furniture got in there, nothing looked right. Thanks for presenting your problem here, as it has helped me. Painting my room is what is needed. My bed is very nice and does not stand out at all. I like the yellow/grey/black/white wavy pillow, and your curtain choices. Are the abouve lighting choices white, or silver? Love the round pendant!
