We just can't help but correct this advice! Vinegar is bad news for your floors. Just as you thought, its acidic nature can eat away at the finish. Not to mention the fact that everyone who uses it mixes it with water, which is also horrible for your floors! We recommend using Bona or Bruce hardwood floor cleaners. They are trusted brands within the flooring industry and are the best products to use.

I use Murphy's oil on my new wood floors and it works great. I vacuum regularly to pick up the dust, then use Murphy's oil spray on a soft swiffer-type mop to clean the floors.

Please do not use Murphy's oil. It prevents refinishing at a later date. Murphy's oil is not appropriate for urethane/polyurethane/acrylic/Aluminum Oxide finishes. When it comes to refinishing the floor, it may not happen because murphy's will gum up machines. It will also cause eventual dulling, extra dirt will get trapped and the finish will age faster than normal cleaning. The floor will also become extra slick.

You may not be able to remove it...no matter what you try.

Good advice. Please listen to them! Murphy's oil soap is horrible. Stay away.

Could the pros comment on the use of steam mops like Shark?

I agree completely with Sophie. I wonder if Swiffer is a subdivision of a flooring company as their adds are doing more to ruin peoples' floors than just about anything.

Steam = death to wood, laminate, cork, vinyl, lino, wall paper, drywall, paint, etc.
The only thing steam is "allowed" to be used on:
Ceramic tile
Porcelain tile
Windows/mirrors (assuming they are glass)
Metal
Concrete (some epoxy's don't like steam so be careful even with concrete floors)
Surgical tools (that falls under 'metal')
End of list. Wood is not listed.
