Looks like dark woods are already there? Go with dark timber and use brightly colored color service ware to light up the room?

Thanks for your responses! So most people have leaned towards dark wood. Would that be because the dark wood table that's already there looks ok? The previous owners used a light wood (see pic). Does the dark wood still look better to you?

Dark table and light whatever is on the table

I like the previous owner's lighter table (but don't try to match it; go a little darker, with a little warmth in the tone), or the mixed material table idea that studio10001 suggested, and you posted. You can have several different woods in a room, so more than two isn't a problem; in fact, it gives more visual appeal to a room to mix it up. With a more contemporary room, you don't want to go too crazy though. If you do decide to go with a darker wood, stay away from those with red tones, like your current set has. And your chairs can be fabric to soften all the wood in the room. Or - you can go a different direction and go slightly industrial in the design. I can see why this is your dream home - beautiful.
