You've got the space for either one of these! They'll be stunners, whichever one you choose. i'd get a larger more striking piece of art for the mantel and remove the sconces.

I love the chesterfield sofas! As much as I like a sectional, we've decided to not go that route because it would block off one of the entry's into the family room and we have one in our basement. Funny you say that, pitbulls, about the candle placement…I'm not crazy about it either!

If I am judging the room size correctly, it is quite large, since a 3-seat sofa covers only the middle window. So I would choose a very long sofa, facing the tv, with two chairs with ottomans and a table in front of the window. Then a nice large coffee table, or a grouping of smaller tables as coffee table.

Your focous is off, your fire place and entertainment center is really fighting eachother. I think you need to play off one being the center. Do something on the fire place either a differnt color or a tile, make it look tall.

I agree with the chesterfield sofas and making the fireplace look taller, the picture could have a wider frame and if it can be changed, more color intense...a chair with an ottoman by the fireplace would give a cozier look...I would not use leather for the chair(s) but a good design, maybe take a cue from your "new" picture! The sofa placement could work well as you have it, a good start just think brighter and bigger for the accent pieces...good luck!

Make the room bigger and get rid of the entertainment center completely :). We can all of the equipment in a closet for you, hang the TV flush on the wall, and clean up the whole look. Let me know if you would like some ideas....

Agree that TV centers are dated and the new gear is so easily hidden. It will make a huge difference in your space if you can eliminate the "elephant" in the room.

how about an U-shaped sectional with two chaises? hard to tell if you have enough room for this layout, but we can make it any size you need. we custom make it from scratch. in leather too ;) xoxo eva

What is your focal point? Looks like wall unit due to color. I agree with above to change the color of the fireplace and add some bright artwork above. I would like to see low cabinet for tv versus something that dominates the room

I just redecorated my family room with the same obstacles. You have a great space. Definitely get rid of the entertainment center and hang your flat screen. A lower tv console will give you an updated look and not compete with your fireplace. I would suggest a standard couch and 2 chairs to start. This allows you multiple seating arrangements and maintains flow into the room. Good luck!

Your room colors are warm but the fireplace looks cool. Perhaps repainting the fireplace surround in a dark, warm brown (similar to your entertainment center) would blend it in more. Try the plants on the fireplace mantle instead of the floor and add some birch logs to the firebox for texture/color.

I agree with others - the art on the fireplace should be much bigger and square or vertical. It should fill up the wall visually. Remove sconces. After you find your great new sofa, mix it up with a pair of chairs that match each-other, but not the sofa, maybe add a smaller chair and small side table near the fireplace? A larger coffee table, and a tall potted plant on the side of the entertainment center closest to the window.

How about an artistic fire screen with any design you desire to replace all the chotchkies? We do all custom size and design, best of luck with your project!

This room is very plain. The colors are all too similar. Use a contrasting color or colors to make the room pop. Try using cushions, floor coverings, area rugs, paintings/art, or paint walls with more variety.

The entertainment unit is so monstrous, size and color-wise. I agree to mount tv with a lower unit below it.

if you need the entertainment unit to stay paint or refinish it a lighter colour. it dominates the room and overwhelms the pretty fireplace & your artwork. it should blend into the walls more. good luck!

Yep, you need some color, darker fireplace to match the entertainment center, change up the wall color. Perhaps continue the rock above the mantel or bold art piece. Dark brown leather sofa would look good. I love the look of big healthy plants. Lamps with black shades, remove the sconces.

I would suggest mounting the tv on the wall above the fireplace and removing the large dark entertainment cabinet.

Is there another wall where the entertainment center will fit? I agree with others that some more color would be nice. I love your blinds, they are gorgeous.

Thank you so much everyone for the comments and suggestions. I am hesitant, but not completely against doing away with the wall unit. I am hesitant because it's new and expensive. We considered using it in our basement, but this room is so big and with 10' ceilings I was worried we'd have a lot of dead wall space. So we put it here…for now. I do not like t.v's mounted above fireplaces, so that's out. I have thought about painting the fireplace trim (a less expensive, quick possible fix). Would black or a dark gray to match the wall unit be too much? So far, I've removed the sconces and rearranged the furniture (still haven't found the right sofas!)

Art and a LARGE rug are where you start. They are the hardest to match. Next furniture to work with the rug.
Paint is last because you can get anything.
The entertainment center really is beautiful. I looked at it closely- I can see why you like it. To lessen the darkness (visual weight) paint the inside OR paint foam core and stick them on the inside.
If you paint the mantle brown to go with the center you will really like it They will work together.
But please don't pick paint BEFORE rug or sofa.
(Been there done that!)

The entertainment center is a darned heavy piece, and I don't mean pounds. Consider the nominal expense of lightening the finish or even painting it. That will make a huge difference.

Your problem is scale That TV cabinet makes the fireplace look like a dollhouse fireplace. I would scrap the TV cabinet and beef up that fireplace with darker wood and more trim to make it appear taller. Definitely larger art over fireplace too. Hang your TV on the wall and keep it low! Maybe you could find something low to go underneath for your components. And. No plants around the fireplace. They think you are going to burn them up JK but think about the image that creates Good luck. You have nice space there

Love idea of two leather chesterfields in a L shape with huge square ottoman, pick a couple of great patterned fabric chairs and just lose the top part of entertainment unit. Since you want leather and your tv console are brown, paint the walls a fresh shade of blue or green hopefully a shade from the pattern chairs! Great artwork over mantle and definately some tall live plants.

I agree with happyleg. Larger scale picture over the fireplace would look better. Also, take down those two objects that are on the walls just outside fireplace space. They move the eye away from a focal point (which should be the fireplace/ picture combo). Take objects off the top of your entertainment center--that isn't where you want the eye to go. I think you could improve the pictures on either side of the pass-through--maybe something larger or two pictures on one side and a larger picture on the other. I'm not a fan of the stuff on the pass-through shelf--creates busy-look. Feed the plant in the corner or replace with something large. It's scale looks undersized to me. I like your paint color. Neutral and classy.

I agree with some of the comments above. Larger art over the fireplace. An area rug to define the seating area. Some smaller chairs shown in one of the photos above and some end tables with lamps that will make the seating area more intimate. I would also consider some stationary drapery panels on the windows to match the height of the entertainment center and fireplace. This will help balance the room out. You have a big room and big rooms need alot of furniture. Just keep that in mind as you shop for your sofas. You will need some extra money to fill in the gaps and make the room the way you want it. If you want the candles, put them beside the picture. I like them group together.

I also think the stuff on top of tv cabinet needs to be removed.

Beautiful room and fireplace. Can you remove the top part of the entertainment center and just have the TV sitting on the bottom portion? I think it looks so oversized because the top is so high. That would shrink it back to a size that's pleasing in relation to your fireplace. Also adding the stationary curtain panels to the sides of your windows as suggested above will help balance the room. Maybe a couple of stools angled at the pass through bar would make it look more purposeful and not so lonely?

That don't look like it can be removed. Just take stuff off the top.

I'd paint the room a color... not neutral... and not dark... use an area rug with some color in front of the entertainment center and fireplace and arrange the sofas and chairs in a more conversational grouping.... I'd add a low shelving unit or table behind the sofa... could be something funky with some personality and put a lamp on it if you have a floor outlet... and maybe the tall vase that is on top of the entertainment center. The art on either side of the pass thru could be hung as a grouping on one wall so they don't look like they are sentries. if there is space left in the room add a game table and chairs. big floor pillows with color piled up in a corner or next to the fireplace cozies things up too. Think your idea of a dark gray on the fireplace trim is a good choice. as others suggested big art over the fireplace will help balance things. By adding color elsewhere in the room the entertainment center won't be so bold. Good luck!

The wall unit can be taken apart to only use the bottom part.

This room has carpeting. Just like hanging a tv over a fireplace, I can't use an area rug over carpeting. It just doesn't work for me, but I've taken some of the other suggestions and started there. I am probably going to paint the fireplace trim next week. I'll post pictures. Sofas are on hold for now, so I've freshened up the ones we have with new pillows.

Yes - the entertainment center is massive and if it is kept, you need to balance it with the other pieces of furniture on the other side of the room. They can't all be large - if you use a sofa and couple of chairs be careful not to use too much and be careful of size. Art work over fireplace could be larger - as a colorful rug on the floor would add to the room.

Barcis, since the top can be removed, would you be open to trying it 'topless' and post another picture when you get a chance? I understand why you don't want to remove it entirely. Maybe a compromise?

I've wanted to paint the fireplace black or dark grey since the house was finished. I like warm colors in the family room. I won't be able to do anything (bookcase, etc) with the top part if I take it apart (the two flanking shelves and bridge over the top are all separate pieces).

Not another dark brown leather sofa, They are over done and old hat and I am sick of looking at them and trying to think of something original to do with them that people who buy them would do. Take the stuff off the top of TV cab. except maybe three compatible pieces of art. If you have to have a leather sofa, get a worn looking one or one in a light color- be original, but not obnoxious with bright colored leather. Remove wall sconces paired, but hanging at odd angles.

Can you put the entertainment center on the opposite wall from the Fire? If so use one sofa and the rest swivel chairs, so you can see which ever you want.
