Exterior entrance help

Looking for suggestions on what to do with the front door area/gable. I hate the empty space above the front door.

We will be replacing the roof, siding and trim. Most likely adding a wooden door. Colors not decided yet.

Pictures would be appreciated :)

The styles we like: craftsman, rustic, transitional, contemporary.

That area has a very tall ceiling, a couple steps into the main house, and a big closet.

I agree with the idea for a window. About the only other thing you could do is build a small overhang over the door a foot or so above the door.

I used, first, Photoshop to crop and lighten the image, then Trimble Sketchup to create a 3D portico trim and header window. Then painted it to match the house, sized it and exported as a 2D image. ;-)

Sstarr's idea is nice. A pair of trapezoid windows following the roof line if the inside is vaulted, could also be a solution. Here is another, with the blessing of the bldg dept (forthcoming).

Here is my graphic idea. I felt compelled to go with something classical, as the gable end is a dominant feature of the entry. I hope that you like it. Happy Houzzing.
