I can't "table" this decision. Help I need chairs

I am tired of my chairs.
What color/type of chairs would you recommend? I like the table but would be open for suggestions. modern rustic is my goal.

rngp...and chacha45,i went looking for roung rugs after reading your post...
Carole, of the ones you've posted, I like the last the best but perhaps a square instead of a round. Also, you have posted 4 really different styles and colorways. I know you said "modern rustic" but what does that actually mean to you? Another way of helping that area to pop would be brightening up the cabinet on the wall. The back of it appears to be very dark unless that's actually just shadows in the picture. Hard to tell what's in there. Is there a way to get a better picture of that?
Oh...smacks forhead...carole's not the OP...doh! However, everything else applies. Just put "chacha45 before the third sentence.

A rug would be a good idea since there is a lot of wood in the room but not everyone likes a rug under a dining table. chacha45, if you don't opt for a rug, I would try to have chairs that have fabric on the seat and on the back.

chacha45, when you say modern rustic, do you mean a chair that has both characteristics or do you mean you want to mix your rustic table with modern chairs?

Modern rustic to me would mean keep the table and chairs and add a single, very large, pottery or metal bowl to the table top.

That with a hanging light along these lines over the table. Of course, as usual, the light I want you to see doesn't come up unless you put the cursor over it!

You may want to look at the industrial style under dining.

i love that look. where are the chairs from? where in Northern CA do you live? we live there also.
Your chairs look great with the table You could get some slipcovers for the chairs to change up the look. A rug under the table would help as someone suggested
  • 12 years ago
Can I ask you where you got your table. It looks like one I have ordered online from home decorators. Love it! In my opinion most any type of chair looks good with that table except a very formal chair. If you search rustic dining table on this site it shows many different types of chairs with rustic tables. Hope this helps

LOVE those last metal chairs posted by Suzanne, but remember metal can be cold to sit on. If it were my dining area, I would paint those chairs you have now a fun color for sure, and replace the seats with something else more modern in design, if the painting isn't enough. you could certainly distress them easily.
Sorry for the poor photoshop, this one was hard to do but I think it can give you an idea of what the last chair would look in your dining room:
Keep your existing chairs, they're good, put a rug for your tootsies if you live in a cold area.
I must say that after I posted the photoshop of the chair above, I find it does not look as good as I thought it would be.
Paint those chairs black before you give up on them!!! The black will make things look crisp and rustic like you want...love the rustic element of the rushed seats. Don't forget to add a great light fixture as well!
I like your chairs especially if they are comfortable - maybe a cushion for the seat in a fun fabric and definitely a rug as others suggest. A modern rustic chandelier too
  • 12 years ago
The chairs are about the only thing I can see in this photo. Can you take photos of hutch and table? I think the chair backs are already beautiful. Perhaps its the woven grass seats that make them seem so "country"? The little bit that I CAN see, I would focus on putting something INTERESTING on the table and rethink this buffet. This picture needs more "umph". Great floors! Where is your dining light?
The photoshop is not very good but I must say, imo, painting the chairs a dark grey and adding a chandelier is an improvement.
Oops I posted the wrong attachment. This one is with the chandelier:

Although the chairs are certainly okay, they do not appear to be an appropriate style match with the "aged" table and scraped floors. An idea of your budget would be a great help in offering options. Good luck,
    Fletcher
Looking much better already! All it needs is a great rug, the arm chairs on opposite sides of the table not next to each other and maybe chair cushions for added color?
chacha45, the photoshop below shows your table with the metal chairs. Sorry but I had to keep your original chairs in the picture.

Would you consider a rug in your dining room? In my previous comment I meant to say 'Would you say that ...' instead of 'I would you say that...'

Thank you so much for your ideas. This is so lame but what kind of a rug would you get?
i dont like the metal chairs as much but i do like the idea of painting black or gray?

I would look at braided rugs. Depending on the colors (so many combos) they can go from traditional to very modern rustic.

I just purchased two of these about an hour ago from World Market
ON SALE. :) They are surprisingly comfy and they had them paired with a very rustic, wooden dining table. They looked fantastic. There are some pictures on their site of customers and how they paired them with wood as well.
When you say: 'i do like the idea of painting black or gray' do you mean painting your current chairs in black or gray?
I will look at rugs tonight. I might have some suggestions. Then, just let me know if I am going into the right direction. Is the ceiling light not far from your table in the hallway or is it in the dining room? Can you have a chandelier above your table?
Yes my current chairs black or what coco 109 just suggested. I really really like those too!
chacha45, you can go with the chair coco1019 showed you but IMO this will not bring your dining room rustic-modern but more rustic-industrial. That would be ok except that I find you would need to bring a lot of changes to get to a true rustic-industrial feel. I think, looking at the walls you have in your hallway, your dining room would be too much contrasting from the rest of your house. This is only my opinion and you or others can see differently which is fine too.

Also, I would like to know if you have draperies in your dining room.
suzanne no draperies do you think i need them? if so will you suggest? and i think you are right i need to color my original ones. or get a rug. or both???
what sort of thing would you put in middle?
Before I do any search, I want to check with you if you agree that the Kanawha Ave. picture is modern-rustic and the Marco-polo Import picture is rustic- industrial. It is ok if you don't see it the same way I do but then, you need to explain to me how you see it so we are on the same page. Once this is established, I would like you to tell me which direction you want to go then I or other houzzers can suggest to you things you might like.
I would love to see coco1019's dining room with these chairs. Maybe she found a nice way to go half-way rustic-industrial. This would inspire me to know what rugs to look for.
Chairs are fine but you could go with colorful chair pads. You could try two different chairs and slip covers to change it out.
yes agreed with your classifications of modern rustic.
lynnnie will you give me an idea of a colorful chair pad?
chacha45, now that we both agree that marco-polo Import is rustic-industrial, can you tell me if you want to go with modern-rustic like Kahawha Ave, picture or half-way rustic-industrial or very much rustic-industrial? If you still don't know which direction you want to go, that is ok, we will just show you more pictures and you can tell us what you like and don't like. So far, I got the impression, you want to go rustic-industrial, am I right?
yes but not sure about the rugs with the chairs.
also what would you put in the middle of the table with those rustic industrial chairs.?
    last modified: 12 years ago
I don't have them in my dining room so, unfortunately, I don't have a pic for you. We're in the process of decorating my living room and dining room. I really liked them and couldn't leave the store without them. I'll figure out something to do. :)

Here is what they paired it with on their site as well as a couple of customers' photos.
Thank you coco1019, I had hard time to figure out the rustic-industrial in chacha45's dining room because I felt that her current dining room is very far from industrial.

Personally, I find the third picture you showed above could be a good inspiration for chacha45. IMO, It has some elements that could relate a bit with the rest of the house but still has modern (chandelier and rug) and industrial (chairs) and rustic (sideboard) feel.
Actually, I think the third picture is eccelectic style. chacha45, is it something you like?
i like the third picture but i am not sure that is what the rest of my house is.
This is so hard. here is my entry way.

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, Here are some examples of what I was thinking of. Click on each link below:

I like this one because of it's tropical feel and goes along with the older style of the chairs, which I think is very quaint: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/169439-bahama-mama-waterfall-chair-pad.html

If you want to go with solid colors, you could have each chair with a different color: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/19732-faux-suede-coffee-bean-chair-pad.html

Either a partial or full slip cover would look nice. These are elegant:
