Should 42" kitchen cabinets reach my 8' ceiling?

I had 42" kitchen cabinets installed in my house (8' ceilings). The reason I went with the 42" cabinets is because I did not want a dust area. When they were installed, they left a 1" gap between the cabinets/crown molding and the ceiling. Is this normal. They say it is, but it seems stupid to me>

Maybe if you were using 36" upper and put some rope lights up there, but not on a 42".

Makes sense to me. Have you measured and your ceiling to floor at multiple locations? Typically they are not a consistent 96" but flux +/ 0.5". I would guess the 1" is for keeping everything level.

It winds up that they should not have had the 1" gap - when I measured the distance between the cabinets and counter it was off - they told me that they measured wrong when placing the cabinets. They moved them up and all is good now!

it is not abnormal to gap them if using trim to cover the gap!
