Paint Cabinets white?

Wondering what people think about painting these cabinets white? Me and my husband are not into the country kitchen look of the curved upper cabinets. I'm wondering if painting them white would bring them back a bit from the 'country' feel or if it's even worth the hassle? I would prefer shaker style cabinets but not sure I want to splurge on all new cabinet doors, I'd say that would be a pricey endeavor. Thoughts? I'm not interested in painting them any other color, only white. I'm a little obsessed with the white cabinet look.

I think white could be pretty. Not sure it would make it less "country kitchen" but could be pretty.

I went though this same problem at my house. In the end I knew I would never like that arch. The good news is that the arches are only on the upper cabinets. How many are you really talking about? The budget way to do this is simply replace the uppers and match them to the lower (non-arched) cabinet doors. There are great door replacement companies on-line. They'll paint them for you to the color of your request. Then you just have to paint the surround.

Now here's the bad news. I don't think you can go for white uppers & lowers unless you are replacing your counters &/or backsplash. The all black will look like a hole in the sea of white counters. (Think of a really pale girl with no other make-up but really thick black eye make-up.) You could stain the bottom cabinets or paint them a darker color -- maybe a dark gray -- and go for the white on the uppers. Not sure if this is the look you're obsessed with, but it would keep the costs down.

I agree, I think white would look much better, I am not a fan of the yellow/orange color of your cabinets now. The white would look great with the black countertops and your flooring

The counters are dark, but there not black, it must just be the photo, they are a pretty dark grey. The cabinets are currently maple, they do look a lot more orange in the picture I will admit. This picture is taken at night to with no natural light, there is actually large windows to the right of the photo that brighten the counters up a LOT in the day time. I do see what you are saying though. Definitely something to think about, I emailed a couple companies about the cabinet doors and they were saying that I would have to go to a local cabinet maker and we only have two here and both I've been informed are extremely expensive.

Please reconsider replacing the doors altogether. The cost difference, when you consider your time taken to paint the doors, should be negligible. Since you have stainless/black appliances, your countertop and backsplash will work okay with white cabinets, however, if you want to get away from the country look, the lower doors should be a rich dark colour. Also consider removing the top valance to get away from the country style.
If you do change the doors, the hardware (handles) you have can work but bars would look more updated and lend to a modern/contemporary feel.
Most importantly, it is your kitchen that you have to live with. Spending a little extra for what you really want is always what I suggest to clients.

Home Depot or Lowes are great places to shop for your cupboard doors. If you are anywhere near an IKEA store, they are a good option as well.

By top Valance do you mean the crown molding at the top of the cabinets? I was under the impression that IKEA only had specific cabinet sizes, that was the jist I got from the website. I'm not near a Home Depot or a Lowes but we do have a Home Hardware and Rona so I'll check those places. I had planned to change the handles if I was to paint these cabinets white.

The issue with replacing the doors is that I don't particularly even like the lower cabinet doors, I would like cabinets more like that attached image so if I'm going to go to the expense of buying new doors I would probably pay the extra and replace ALL of them.

I think you'd love the white…it's always current.
I'm in same situation. Going white, which I think will be fine with your current backsplash. Ikea will not match your cabinets and their designs are quite different and would look like a mismatch. I personally don't think the arch will bug you as much in white.

One thing I would do is raise the cabinets up closer to ceiling. No real need for this much space & it is dust catcher.

    I agree with white

Yes, I was referring to the crown moulding on top.
Rona is even better than the other two, I just wasn't sure if you had Rona in the US (I'm in Canada). You will most likely find Home Hardware to be very expensive, comparatively, if they even have doors available. You are also correct about IKEA and their limited selection. I find that unless you are doing everything IKEA, you will have a difficult time to match things up.
Good luck with your project and try to have fun while doing it!

Replacing doors or refacing is not cheap ,relatively speaking. I have same dilemma with my cabinets and I received a couple of quotes for refacing(I am in Ontario) and they are all above 4K (4.5K-8K) for my 10 x 10 L- shaped cabinets.

I would definitely do white. It's timeless and classic and will never get old! I don't know if you saw this article on here, but if you scroll down about half way, you can see a kitchen that was very similar to yours then you can see how nice it looks in white: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-to-reface-your-old-kitchen-cabinets-stsetivw-vs~21506444

Have a look at this website. It is in "the lettered cottage" blog called "Tommy and Shelley's new kitchen". They show how to transform panelled doors to shaker style doors.

white would look awesome. Just add blue and orange and other colorful glass accessories, change one or two cabinets with glass front and puck light. Thta will give you instant contemporary feeling.

I'm not a fan of grey cabinets, especially these style. Shaker style looks nice in grey but we have way to much grey in our kitchen already and I'm not interested in re-doing floors, we just had those done and I love them. Thanks for the mock ups Kevin, I personally love the white ones I think it looks lovely even with the arches. I did look at the tutorial to change these to shaker though and it looks like it might be an option, albeit a very labor intensive one. Lots of options to think about!! Thanks for the advice guys,

I just took a really rough guess and if the bigger top doors are right around 16 to 18 inches wide and 36 tall or so.. just some guessing dimensions. Unfinished in Maple those doors shouldn't cost more than 50 dollars a piece unfinished and you can kind of guess the clear coat finish will cost about twenty dollars per door. So high side I would say they should be no more than 80 to 90 a piece. Although I finished at 70, some are higher. But just a money reference point for you.

I like the white. If you go with the cream, you could always paint the door to match--I would also paint the walls.

Some people mentioned painting the walls too. That could also change the look of the kitchen. Here are a taupe, caramel, green and blue ideas.

tiabella, if you have any other color ideas you want to see let me know. I'll try to mock them up for you.

Thanks Kevin. Our main floor is all VERY open and it would be hard to do paint breaks that work, I spent a LOT of time trying to find a grey color for the walls that I liked so I'm not real interested in painting the kitchen, the blue I don't mind but the other colors are a no go, everything before was a very beige blah color and that isn't my style at all. I really enjoy greys, whites, blacks, as does my hubby. I like to bring the color in with actual pieces.

I'm thinking I will probably go ahead and paint them white and change the hardware. I am going to get a cabinet company to give me a quote for new shaker doors though so might do that depending on the price, though I suspect it will be more than I want to spend.

    Thanks again guys :)

White white is beautiful, think the white would look better than the cream, the door trim is white, would be better that they match. The cream looks dirty with the white.

Kevin Strader, which software do you use? Is it freeware? I have the same issue with my kitchen. I have o stay little conservative as all homes in the are where I live are cookie cutter homes. Very standard and taht only sells. But at teh same time we have test for more transitional/contemporary/modern. Can't live with dated kitchen even though budget is tight. So, we are going with painting cabinets white, island espresso and later changing the wall colors to a shade darker for contrast.

Is there any way fro me to visualize my kitchen in white and espresso?
There are a hundred shades of white. I would go with a soft euro white color, try to redo the uppers to Mach the bottom cabinets. It appears that your counter tops are black. That should go with a soft white. Be careful matching your white cabinets to the existing white trim in your home. Good luck!
Do I match the trim or not? I think I shoudl not. Out trims are sharp or super white. but for cabinet if we go with white, it would be simply white by BM paint
  • 12 years ago
I think if they blend with one another you'll be fine . Look at the base of the white paint, is it a yellow white, blue white etc. if you stayed in the same family it should be fine.
I would not worry about your dark counters. My kitchen in Fla has white cabinets, black counters and I did one accent wall in black. Trust me. It is outstanding. Add colour with accessories. You will love it. You can also alter the curvy top with a special hand tool to make them less apparent. When painted,,,you will br happy.
