HELP! Need to decide granite color and edge today!

Measure day is finally here (after the long awaited cabinets). All this time I thought opalescence (also called Black opal). I am second guessing that. My worries with it have been: crumbs/dust more noticeable, lights reflecting more. I liked it because I profided contrast to cabinets and backsplash... pulled things together. Gave a classy/timeless look -- I "think."
One other concern now that cabinets are here and I can see things better -- black cooktop.. will the black granite look good or bad with no contrast there?? oh... the hardware on cabs will be black -- planned around the granite!
Other consideration - Caledonia. More contrast to cabinets. But less to the backsplash -- would that make it too "busy" -- and take away from the backsplash? It could alleviate some of the other concerns. Create another color element though...?

Stick with initial plan? Change? HELP!

EDGE -- had planned ogee. Any reason I shouldn't use it ?? Cabinets have an arch top. I think style wise it's good. Practical or no? Other consideration would be 3/8 round top/bottom eased. (not quite a bullnose).

I would stick to your first choice. The busy granite with a busy backsplash is too much. Don't let the granite guys talk you into a granite trim. Run the backsplash level with counter. Enjoy your new space!

What do you think of backsplash? If I were to go with the Caledonia (one of left/3rd pic).... what kind of backsplash would pull cabinets and counter together and look good?

I'm not a designer but you sound desperate for some quick replies. I like the two darker ones in the photo with the three samples. My monitor is showing a pinkish color to the Caledonia which I don't like with the yellowish of the cabinets. Sorry, but I'm not sure that any of the samples work well with the backsplash.

I like the medium dark one. It seems to have the greenishness of the backsplash.

My vote goes to the one in the middle of the 3 samples.

Black and stick with the orignial design. Also, you might consider hiring a designer by the hour just to come and have a look and help you make your decision. It would be well wortht he money in this case. Do go Caledonia, it's too busy. Also, listen to Jennakeroyd. She makes a great point about the backsplash and trim. You have to live with it, not the installers!

Thanks all! What about Caledonia for my powder room... same cabinet color but not backsplash to complicate things in there. The faucet is rubbed bronze, but I just don't think the brown on the black would look right.

THoughts on edge? Ogee edge for both? it's traditional... but for the most part the kitchen is (except for the modern flare in the backsplash). Any disadvanages to Ogee? Do you loose some space with it? Not enough to matter? Harder to clean?

I agree with Carla. Is the sample in the center Uba Tuba? If so, that will work best with the cabinets and the back splash you selected. I specify a square edge on all of my projects, which will give you the timeless look you are going for.

The middle one (medium) is Steel Rock. Will it look okay being more gray than black with the black cooktop and also black cabinet hardware/handles?? The edge you'd recommend would be eased edge? Is there a reason to not go will Ogee? Or is that more dated? I wouldn't choose the beveled for that reason. I also am not attrached to the bullnose or half bullnose. Ogee or the 3/8 eased (slight round). I am not sure that I want 90 degree square -- that seems "too modern" -- or am I wrong?

Here is a picture off another site with this backsplash and dark cabinets....however, they have a light counter. With all that I looked at, I really think the darker does it more justice. What do you all think of it and imagine the dark granite. Also, my cabinets do have a raised panel and arched top. So, will the ogee edge go ok?

It looked like Uba Tuba on my screen. I would stick with the black. It will look great with the cook top and the knobs and give you the timeless look you are going for. I would change the back splash, though. You should have time to do so while they fabricate the counters. The edge I recommend is the square edge, or sometimes it is called a flat edge. Yes, ogee is outdated in my opinion.

I just saw the photo you posted. I would definitely stick with the black granite, but go with a square, 1 1/2" thick edge. The combination of all of the above will give you the classic/timeless look you are going for.

Listen to Inspired Interiors, she is spot on.

The square edge is also sometimes called an eased edge. Don't go with ogee. The upcharge for that edge is not worth it. Black granite will give you the uninterrupted look with black glass on your stove. I'm not crazy about the backsplash but if you are in love with it, it's okay.

If your backsplash is not already up, I would then choose the lighter granite and run it up the backsplash. It is a cleaner look and timeless.

I know this is a super old post so I don't know how this works, but I love it with the black granite, and would really like to see the finished picture if you could!
