#fishbis10, Thanks for your question. In regard to a border around the tile on the backsplash, we didn't use a border for 2 reasons: 1. On contemporary installations, we often prefer a "cleaner" look that doesn't use a border, 2. the installation method was glue-up, which means that the tile is glued directly to the wall (as opposed to being "floated" 3/4 to 1" out from the wall), and 3. no coordinating borders were available from Sonoma Tilemakers. (OK, I know that I said 2 reasons, but I discovered that I had 3 when I wrote them down.)
If you prefer a contemporary style, then you may want to do everything you can to keep the tile flat to the wall, with no added trim or fussiness. On the other hand, I do like the tailored, square look of a glass tile bumped out from the wall 1" or more (either on a mortar bed, a cement-board such as Hardi-backer, or even on 2 x 4's), with a straight return back to the wall using some of the same tile. I've attached an image, below, of a kitchen backsplash with larger glass tile ( I hope it posts).
Alternatively, some stores and companies now have glass dome liners that look like a cross between stained glass and molten glass, which can add a sort of earthy, organic glitz (whatever that means) to your backsplash design. For example, Arizona Tile here in California has their "Shimmer" line (a line similar to the tile used in the original photo), and they have 8 different colors of 1/2 x 8 handmade-looking, clear glass dome liners that are quite reasonably priced.
    Good luck on your projects-
