i like what you did around the sink, but two pot light between the range with led valance light below the upper cabinets seems a lot ? and will there be enough light at the centre of the kitchen? also shouldnt the pot light be place to work like ambient light and puck lights used for task light.

I agree with Fred S. It's important that the lights are not straight above the range but also not too far away from it either. If they are behind you your shadow when you're standing there will block the light. Are you planning to have any cupboards above the range / cookers?

no it will be a custom made canopy with an insert hood vent. good point, the reccessed lights i will be using is an led par20 7 watts which is equivalent to a incandescent 50. If i use this positioning, will there be a dark spot in the middle? this is a tough layout, idealy if the island is centred then i can use pennants to fill in the centre and pot lights along the cabinetry.

The layout isn't that tough, your information is just wrong. You need to start with the lumens, not the 50 watt equivalent, because the light companies lie. A 50 watt equivalent would put off around 550 lumens and I bet what you are using has half that. You need about 300 lumens per foot of counter top length at about a 30 degree beam angle. Range hoods usually don't put out much light and are too low for the light to spread. To the counter top where you will be using a sharp knife. Do not try to rely on under cabinet lights for task light. It is like trying to prepare dinner in front of your car headlights. It is accent lighting and should not be counted in the 300 lumens per foot task lighting overhead. Or be more than 30% of total.
What are you planning on doing on the floor that needs more light than the counter top? Ambient light is generally the light that bounces of the walls and counters and spills into the room due to the beam angle.
