I've been watching all the pics & posts. So here's my 2 cents. Go back to A (sort of). It appears like there's another type of flooring behind the sofa. If so, using the sofa to define the different spaces is perfect. Chairs are great in front of the window. Lose the giant coffee table. Move the couch a little closer toward the chairs. Move piano to opposite wall. Place curio or armoire (your choice) in the nook where the piano is now. Get rid of the small area rug. If you don't have a large rug, better to go with no rug. Thanks for considering my thoughts.

Most definitely A! "A" looks like you had a professional come in and arrange your stuff. :-)

The chairs are off in B....should be angled and not pushed together.

"C" takes me back to the 70's when everyone wanted to put the long sofa on the long empty wall. "A" just looks more inviting, open, and up-to-date while still having a traditional flair (thanks to the pretty shape of your chairs).

Also, love the curio over the wardrobe, and like the big square coffee table.

All arrangements are lovely ,,, but each needs to be brightened and lightened up. Of all, I like A the most.

I still like A the best but I like the table between the chairs and them by the window. It's a great place to sit and read with your coffee on the table beside you. Don't put that sofa under that window though! The light would fade the red and then you will be stuck forever hiding the back of it against walls.

Maybe move the 2 chairs in front of the window with table in middle with lamp and sofa across facing the window. Need a different rug and I think a darker coffee table

I like C, but why does the couch have to be against the wall? The whole arrangement should be moved so the chairs and couch are facing each other on either side of the window. Not saying right up against the wall with the window, more in the middle of the room. There should be a little room to move around the whole outside of the room.

I liked D actually.

Arrangement A appears to "feel" more comfortable to the eye. Perhaps pulling the furniture closer together towards the coffee table and away from the window would ease the room's traffic flow. Pretty!

B

A - get rid of pictures and curio. Hang rug on wall. Below rug put either a low cabinet or a shelf same length as rug. Pull chairs in closer to coffee table add a new rug to tie them together. Put end table next to couch. Decorate window area with plant life.

I would say C it looks a lot more inviting and warm while A is more of a typical room and B is awkward

Could you put the chairs on either side of the cabinet and put a bench or maybe a desk in front of the window

Consider light slip covers to save your couch's colour in the summer time. Looks as if you have a different arrangement possible for each season! You really do need a larger rug in winter, perhaps no rug in summer.

I agree with Sara Parker about slipcovers as a seasonal option.
If you are not ready to commit to the expense of custom slipcovers, Surefit makes a fine 3 piece slipcover (don't recommend anything other than the 3 piece, the one and 2 piece products will drive you crazy.)
I have one in oatmeal on a guest room sofa until I have it re-upholstered and I like it.

B is a disaster! People get board and some furniture salesman or interior desecrator tells them to turn everything on a 45 degree angle. Ugh! Now that being said replace the curio in A with the piano and bench, hang the mirror that is currently over the piano vertically rather than horizontally and it will add enormous visual height to the room as well as making the whole room appear larger, and bounce light from the window in the room. A hanging chandelier would help as well. Place the two paintings on the wall to the left and right of the mirror.

Center the curio where the piano was so that it lives in it's own space, and because of it's height fills the space better and yet relates to the height of the top of the mirror over the piano across the way. You need a larger area rug to tie the whole living room area together rather than the one that is there, that as small as it is, looks like a bathmat. Why do people do that. It is a whole room not just a rug for the coffee table to sit on. If you want to keep the one that you have got, then think of getting a larger bound solid piece of carpet or rug, say a low pile plush or even a bound sisal. That will provide texture and you can still use your smaller rug but the room will be unified and not feel like everything is miles apart and floating and be sure the front legs, at least of the two arm chairs and the sofa are on the larger rug. You should have only about 18" to 20 " from the front of the sofa to the front edge of the cocktail table. Fold the throw and drape it on the back of the sofa, not crumbled up on the cocktail table. If you decide to do C then put the side table with a lamp on it, on the right side of the sofa that is now where the curio was and a chair on each side of the sofa facing into the room not on an angle but like a u shape, keeping the whole room open however still getting a larger area rug to tie the whole room together. Yes your floors are gorgeous but the larger rug sisal if you can get from say Pottery Barn or on line, gives texture without expense and I would say the room could handle at least 8' x 10". We don't know what is going on behind the sofa in picture A, is there a wall for the curio there or the piano and mirror? The two same sized art works can go over the sofa, just not sticking out beyond it or the mirror that is currently over the piano, horizontally. Keep the cocktail table in front of the sofa at least 20" and it tightens up the whole grouping, remember at least the front legs on the rug for both chairs and sofa. As far as light getting on the sofa and turning it pink, think about sheers under the drapery panels to soften the whole look or window film that you still see through, it just cuts the glare and UVA/B rays dramatically get it on line or the yellow pages.

The most important thing though is that you have taught Houzz readers a Very valuable lesson. That you can always play with a sofa and two chairs, where as you get REALLY locked in when people get a left arm facing or right arm facing sectional. Bravo on which ever you decide as both are correct...just not B!!!!!

If you do the above as C either the bench can go on the other side of the cocktail table keeping it the same distance as the sofa is to the table, giving you seating for seven or keep it with the piano.

Similar to this except no console table behind sofa and the bench in front of the cocktail table, obviously no fireplace, and the whole thing moves back against the wall. Window on the right. Basic but not boring and you still have all the focal points you can use.

Definitely A. Larger rug. Tent your windows! Mine are tented..you will love them! Easy installation and reasonable price. Well worth it to save your furnishings. A is a warm and inviting room. Good luck!

I think they mean "tint" your windows using window film for sun glare...not yards and yards of fabric as in the Arabian knights.

Notice this goes back to March of 2014 in case you do not hear an update. I love it when they come back, though.

Hi Houzzers! I don't know how this ended up re-trending, but I thought I would post my "after" and how the room looks today. The curio is now in the master bedroom and I brought out the buffet from another room. Added the rug. As you can tell, I love color. I think it turned out well. Next month, my daughter will be moving into a larger home, so the piano will be moving to her house. Then...I'll be rearranging again!! Thanks for all the comments and help!

Abbey Jean - I've been wanting that piano out of my house for 10 years now. Now, it just has sort of settled in there, finally. Oh well, I will enjoy when my grandson learns to play it, and the new adventure to figure out what will go in its place :-)

Our daughter and family took our piano when we moved 5 years ago. The kids are now old enough for piano lessons and really want them, so I am happy THEY have it now. Frees up so much space!!!

Duh!!! Obviously the curio goes in the space where the piano is...was, will no longer be. and I would add a tall tree next to it a fiddle head perhaps?

I'd need to add some light and bright in this room - although much better arrangement in furnishings - the citrine green is falling flat, and I want something to grab the light and bounce it around so I can see that gorgeous area rug! I'd paint the coffee table white - and/or change out the throw blanket to creamy pearl or luminescent white - something textural to pick up and brighten the space.

Please - bring down the wall colour into some accessories - either in candles, toss cushions or your throw - just a few more tweaks and your there!

Inspiration photos to help you get there - what makes these rooms successful is the balance of lots of white if you have all dark furniture, definitely bringing down the yellow colour off the walls and into the room - makes it feel more cohesive...If you must have the green throw, then make sure you've added that green in artwork, or candles or a vase or something up on your buffet table - preferably in the artwork...Good Luck!
