White or Stainless Appliances

I need new appliances and thinking about white instead of stainless. My kitchen is kind of dark and I heard white is the new color. What do you think? I welcome all comments and suggested wall color.

Over the past couple of years we've had several clients interested in white appliances. In each case they've decided to use panels or stainless. I can't wait for someone to finally do a retro kitchen using Elmira or one of the other makes, but so far nobody's followed through.

Stainless is still the most preferred finish for appliances. It compliments modern and traditional kitchens. Here is a traditional kitchen we completed with stainless steel appliances.

Go with white. It will make your kitchen less dark, and over the years you'll be glad about that.

My vote is stainless. I replaced all my white with stainless a few years back and I LOVE the change. There is lots of shine with stainless - won't be a problem in a dark kitchen at all.

There's a new product line called white ice (I believe they are whirlpool gold appliances) - it's shiny white with stainless handles and really pretty - more modern than just white, but not as high maintenance/heavy as stainless.

As nice as it is to save money by putting in white appliances, people simply envision a classy kitchen to include stainless appliances at the moment. At the minimum, the white ice is the way to go. However, if you really want to finish the space 100%, I would wholeheartedly recommend purchasing the stainless steel appliances. Best wishes!

Why not visit the website and try out their Kitchen Stylist Tool online? You can swap out the stainless for white, and see which you like best?

If you want your kitchen to look like a cheap builder house built on spec, then for sure go with white!

Stainless is the way to go.

I'm partial to white FOR MYSELF. I had a similar granite with white cabinets and white appliances in my kitchen and loved it.
In this case, I think stainless steel will look better with the darker stained cabinets. White will stand out and contrast too much. It will make 'cold spots' in the otherwise warm cabinetry.

Also, trends come and go, but the stainless trend seems to have serious staying power. As I see it, you might as well be trendy for the time being and stainless is pretty classic too for when the trend ends. I kind of agree with what felixgrantham said just a few posts up.

There was a thread about white appliances on houzz. The majority of the posters on that one thread liked white. I can't tell you the name of it, but it's out there if you want to search for it,

I would expect to see stainless in a kitchen like that. When people say they like white appliances I think they are envisioning something high end like this: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/new-old-white-kitchen-appliance-inspiration-192500

Thanks for posting that jenakeroyd. If anyone reads the comments after the discussion on that link, you will see that lots of people still like white. I think it is funny how the stainless fans are so adamant that stainless is best. People should just get what they like

I don't have stain les steel appliances , never wanted them, but I know how to decorated with white. And this kitchen is not meant to have white. Bad for resale.

If you decide to go stainless, try WD40 to polish them. It keeps fingerprints to a minimum as suggested by the delivery guy. Until I bought some WD40, I quickly regretted getting SS as I was always wiping off prints. After I week of constant wiping, I bought some. He was right! I love mine now and think they would look great in your kitchen. The shine will keep it bright
  • 12 years ago
    I vote stainless

Depends on when you are selling. There's a great game to be played watching HGTV -- when the house shopper says "stainless", everybody drinks! If you are selling in the next five years, probably get stainless. If not, get whichever you personally like better. I prefer white for my kitchen because it's more vintage and I have an old house. I also think it brightens up the space more, but I could see stainless with the finishes you have there.
To me stainless says sterile like a hospital lab not a home. There are so many cheap SS options now it is no longer even high end. Don't know why it is still popular.
Somebody said that stainless goes better with earth tones.. and they are correct, but, for those of us who don't like stainless, why can't there be an off white option??? I did not say almond, just off-white. Creamy off white would look amazing with stainless handles. Some of us are just sick and tired of having stainless pushed on to us. Let's face it, the reason people like the trendy colors is because we see them in the magazines and TV. The appliance manufacturers dictate what we will like. Just like Milan dictates what you will be wearing this season. If they sell too many appliances in too many colors they are left with too much leftover inventory. And that is the sad truth. Ten years from now we will all be looking at stainless the way we look at the avocado and harvest gold's of the 70's. If the centerfold of a magazine showed a gorgeous cream or other colored kitchen all done up nice, we would all love that too. So my answer is go with what makes you happy!
I just looked at the Whirlpool site and I really like that white with stainless option. Best of both worlds.
Only go with stainless if you never plan to use the kitchen and never plan to sell your house. If you actually use the kitchen, it will always be full of smudges, fingerprints, and water spots. Yuck. Most women who have had stainless in the kitchen hate it. Manufacturers now make appliances in a large range of colors; you don't have to be stuck with white.
    That's just silly.
Pfffttttt! We have a stainless kitchen and it takes a minimal amount of care to keep looking good. WD-40 is one solution and there are others. Wipe it down with a microfiber cloth.

In then end, decide what you want to do and go for it. It's your kitchen.
Hi---SS for you---if your kitchen were white, then white would be fine... CheerS!
I have had white and now SS.....I'm not a clean a holic by any means and my SS is very easy to keep looking good. Quick wipe down after dinner and good to go!

I recently spent $10,000.00 on new stainless steel appliances just for the look. I had white and liked my older appliances better than the new. They are suppose to be energy efficient but the microwave, dishwasher and washer take twice as long. We recently bought another house to renovate. I will not change the white for stainless.

I truly think your kitchen needs stainless. It will look much more updated, and, as someone mentioned, stainless has had some staying power. Also, I had all white appliances in our previous home. Trust me, I spent more time cleaning those white appliances than the stainless we have now.

It's a little hard to tell in your photos...what are the handles on your cabinets? If you go with stainless appliances, I would change them to stainless, too.

Regarding the wall paint, like me, it looks like you have lots of cabinets and somewhat minimal wall space in the kitchen. If so, I don't think you could go wrong with a soft white or cream with your cabinets and floor.

If the cabinets are relatively new I would purchase panels for your dishwasher and refrigerator. Then go with stainless steel wall/microwave combo. Otherwise I would stick with stainless steel throughout. I think your kitchen can take it without making it seem darker.
what about a modest house, small cottage/craftsman style--seems stainless would be out of place--would appreciate your thoughts.
We had to replace a dishwasher. All the appliances are white and me, not really a trendy type, do not want stainless mainly because everyone has it. We went with the White Ice and I like it. Looking to replace the double oven/microwave combo and haven't looked at it in the store but online it doesn't look to be ALL white. Seems to have a little stainless steel.

How did white all of a sudden become a new "trend"? I always thought white would be a timeless color and can go with anything. I get how it was associated with cheap as opposed to stainless over the last 50-15 years or so, white should be acceptable in any kitchen, of any style, forever. I've read comments about white appliances coming "back"... I didn't know they were a trend in the past that has come back.
Old thread,, but as a woman I LOVE my stainless steel appliances. and they are VERY easy to clean (no harder than keeping white cabinets or dark floors.) Simple wipe is all it takes.

kayjay- it's not so much as them being a trend in the past as much as what was produced at the time- sort of like how PCs used to be beige only until about the late 90's early 2000's that the manufacturers started making them black and now metal (MACs).
You're right though, white or any color should be acceptable in anyone's kitchen- it is after all their kitchen, I just would ask for a credit for new appliances if I were buying a house with white ones.

To me white looks cheap, builder grade stuff-unless you get the high end appliances as mentioned earlier in the thread link. SS is here to stay. Attached is what I think of immediately when i see white appliances.

Stainless would give you the most flexibility should you decide to make any other changes to your kitchen in the future.
White. Microwaves aren't a huge investment but if you don't plan to add stainless anytime soon, white would be less obtrusive.

    Oh yes, Whirlpool White Ice!

Your stainless faucet won't stand out because they have stainless handles. Very chic. And not all those awful fingerprints.

What I'm taking from these comments is that we SS owners actually keep our kitchens cleaner. LOL.

The "White Ice" collection from Whirlpool is the best of both worlds. The white is not a matte but a smooth gloss finish w/ stainless accents, ie. the handles and pads. It lends itself to a more contemporary look.
