I hate recessed lighting as it is so difficult to replace the bulbs, however you might check the size of the bulbs for the 6 inch to see if you can hold them to screw them in and out...depends on the size of your hands. They are generally placed where you need the light, as you won't be having any other lights other than perhaps a pendant over your island.

Under counter lights under the dish shelves would help with that counter. Don't know about pendant with the range hood. Six inch cans are usually spaced every three feet from center to center around the outside of the room. Generally they are placed about six inches into the room from the front edge of the countertop.

There is a type of 4 inch bulb that provides a more focused light. Can't remember what it is called but that would be best over the counter areas.

Just saw the additional picture. It would be really nice to have some pendants over that counter that runs in front of the windows. Hope to add a pic of mine.

Remember to consider the shadows created when family members of varying heights stand at a counter. Bearing rafters in mind, aim to place the cans for good task lighting without those shadows. Dimmers are a wise choice--otherwise, it is all about how you will use the space and the effect of light on your elevations and finishes.

Hi there, I would recommend wrapping your counters with recessed pot lights. They should be about 2' out from the back splash so the light is directly over your work space. That way your not going to get head shadows. Also 4" pot lights would be very typical for this kitchen. You could install 5" as well. Not a lot of difference. Some 5" pot light cans can take a 75W lamp which is nice sometimes. But not needed.
