Thanks for the compliment! There are probably six different styles of wood in this ceiling, all with a 3/4" thickness. White washed, unfinished, red, yellow, and green, barn siding, as well as sheathing that was blackened from a house fire. Some of the wood is oak, but most of the wood species is some type of pine. If you are considering this style installation, you will need to figure out the square footage to determine the cost. Once the colors and styles were chosen, we purchased the reclaimed wood in equal amounts, and ripped all of it on a table saw in three widths, 2", 4" and 6" so that a 6" board could be butt against a 2" and 4" to create symmetry in the mosaic. Sometimes we would run the same size through the course, but had the option to change when needed. We installed 5/8" plywood as a base, and fastened the reclaimed wood with 18 g. headless nails directly through the face. This wood needs to stay dry, so installation under a deck would have to have a roof of some kind above it. Ambient moisture is fine, but direct rain would ruin it. An application of silicone would help preserve the colors, and would be the only occasional upkeep.
