What was your childhood bedroom like?

Was your room neat as a pin, decorated like a magazine cover? Was it a chaotic collection of toys? Covered in posters of your favorite musicians?

My older sister picked out heinous wallpaper much like the attached samples when she was five years old, and then passed the room on to me where I suffered 'til one college break when Mom and Dad were in Italy, and I couldn't take it anymore and ripped it all down and repainted a soothing 1980's camel beige as a backdrop for the antiques I'd started collecting (instead of studying!)

I still have that tapestry I picked up at the flea market for $6 in storage. (Cursor over for wide view.)

I remember my Mom starting to strip off cowboy wallpaper in my new bedroom. It took several attempts to get it all off so she told me I could color on the remaining pieces still on the wall. It was a lot of fun. As a teen, I tried to make my bedroom look Asian by building a screen with wood and bamboo shades. It was semi-successful. I still like Asian theme decor. I never had a decent closet!

My dad put up these adjustable shelves on tracks and I remember we painted them red. I must have been 3 or 4 and that was my first paint job! They were down by the foot of my bed and I used to lie in bed listening to a transistor radio and looking at those red shelves and all the cool stuff I put on them!

I almost forgot about my Ricky Nelson poster. Am I giving away my age? I don't have any memories of it being either messy or neat. That must have not been important to me.

As a little girl, I had white furniture .. desk with hutch .. pink ruffled bedding. Then, in my teen years, I had scandanavian teak furniture. An orange flip/couch bed, teak wall unit and a round orange turning chair. I was in love with orange and Mom even let me paint one of my walls orange :)

When I was younger my bedroom was filled with inherited antiques and I used to move large furniture around by myself just to change things up. For my 15th birthday I got a room makeover and chose orange, green and bright pink BLACK LIGHT wallpaper (I kid you not) and orange pleather bedspread and drapes. Groovy baby!!! My parents couldn't wait for me to go off to college so they could get rid of that abomination.

I hated them too! Just saw one in an antique shop yesterday and had a good laugh to myself.

I shared with my 2 sisters. The oldest in the middle of 3 twin beds. The room was over the garage with slanted walls at about 3' high on each side. It was a fairly large room with a huge reach -in closet on opposite wall. We shared the closet, clothes too, and each had our sections to use. Mom did a makeover and it was very beautiful. The center bed had a faux canopy and we each had beautiful heavy wrought iron headboards. In between were gold painted wall mounted tables, enough for a glass of water or a book. it was more of that French provincial style, way to fancy from the rets of the house, but she fun doing it over.
There was also a space under the eaves that you could only get to by crawling through a 2' high door. We had our girls only club in there!

My childhood bedroom was upstairs in an old farmhouse with no heat on the second floor. Its a wonder we survived those deadly cold Iowa winters! As a teenager I was fascinated with all things hispanic so I decorated it with a velvet wall hanging depicting a bullfight, a big black Mexican sombrero with gold trim, a suit of armor named Maynard and pictures of my pony Caballito. I think my decorating taste has improved (somewhat!) but still haven't lost that fascination with all things hispanic....must have been latina in another life LOL!

I can't even remember my childhood...LOL. But, my 42yr old daughter's bedroom was black with black and white checkerboard tile floors and a life size pic of James Dean hanging on the wall. Mt husband made her a black and white Dalmatian shaped bedside table. We still have the table in the attic!

My brother painted his room with "Day-Glo" paint and installed a black light.

My mother painted my bedroom chocolate brown and sewed pink froufrou bedcovers! Any wonder I hate brown still? The rest of the house had swimming pool aqua walls with grey carpeting throughout. 1950's.

I started with a room with vertical blue and white (and I mean BRIGHT BLUE) stripes about 8" wide. Later it got paneled and those 12" textured ceiling tiles installed. I went from toys chaos to typical 'le pit' to putting 9x12 horse posters all the way around the ceiling edge (then stringing my TV arial wire along there too to get tv signals from the Delorane repeater).
Then I took all that down, and covered my door inside with aluminum foil (it looked cool) and built brick and board stacked shelves and covered fruit crates with aluminum foil to make a bedside table. (my teen friends thought it was so cool)

I don't remember when I was real young, but for my 13th b-day my parents decorated my room however I wanted. I had white, what then was called french provincial furniture, you know stark white with gold accents. I wanted white walls with a black ceiling with gold. My mom spent a whole day with arms overhead painting gold abstract brush design on the ceiling. She made my bedspread and pillow shams. Are you ready - white with small red polka dots. I had that room until I finished high school. I just loved it and so did my friends.

My "bedroom" was an alcove in the hallway of our one bedroom apartment in a 12 story building in the Bronx. I had a twin trundle bed, and enough room for a bookcase at one end and a nightstand, upon which say a giraffe lamp. I was meticulous about keeping all my dolls and books in a particular order.

I forgot to mention that as bad as my flower power bedroom was at home, I was delighted with the crazy rainbow room that I shared with three siblings at our summer home. My dad and grampa built a queen sized bunkbed out of 4x4 timbers that took up most of the tiny room, painted orange with yellow and white Merimekko bedding. The walls were bright yellow, and there was a rainbow spanning three of the four walls -- along with a small bureau -- created from a spectrum of leftover paint (and a little groovy inspiration.) Years later the enormous bunk bed sadly came out...but only by use of a chain saw.

Samantha, I've heard/read that NYC apartment bedrooms were often small and/or makeshift. I had a brother-in-law who slept with his brother on a pull-out couch in the living room & their parents slept in the one bedroom.

Adding to my bedroom comments...my older sister was messy (still is) and I was the neat one (still am...but anal about it). It was difficult for the neat child to live in the chaos.

Should read "not anal" . Ha!

My childhood bedroom was my first design project! I had a blue room because all of my friends had pink. I thought I was so unique. :)

I begged my mom for really ornate French provincial furniture. It was off white with gold trim and really overdone in retrospect. I wish I had listened to her and agreed to the much simpler lines of an Italian provincial set. I had a little canopy that came from the ceiling and had the same fabric as the bed skirt. It was a cute, very girly room. I wish I had a picture....

The thing I remember most about my childhood bedroom was the lushness of my plants in the sunny window, my pet rabbit, and my dog sleeping with me in bed. I was so happy that it didn't ever phase me that I slept on a cot, often with no heat in the house.

I went to summer camp when I was eight. When I came home, my parents had bought a Sears white canopy bedroom set for me as a surprise. I had a variety of bedspeads at first for some reason, but finally settled down with a butterfly printed ruffled number.

White French provincial set, canopy , blue quilt made by my mother. The hutch was beautiful which I decorated with my doll and book collection. I still have all of these items except for the hutch. My daughter used my set when she was younger.

And my mom didn't allow us to have posters, but I convinced her to allow a Donny Osmond poster. Mom agreed since he was "clean cut". !!!!

I shared a room with my sister that was packed with white painted missmatched furniture. My side was a mess and hers was neat as a pin. I must have driven her crazy. Good thing we shared though because she saved my life when I had a medical emergency during the night.

I had a window seat, where I curled up and read everyday. And posters on the walls! Madonna, Wham!, New Kids on the Block. Haha, just had an 80's flashback.

my sister and i shared a pantry. yes, a pantry. we were poor and there were 5 kids plus mom in a 2 bedroom house. thus the pantry became our bedroom. it was big enough to fit a small bunkbed and a dresser that was flush with the bunkbed so you could only open the 2 top drawers, one drawer for me, one for sister. sad yes, but at least i got the bottom bunk so when the boogeyman or t-rex came in to eat us, they'd get her first up there and i'd have time to escape....that's what i thought anyway....

I had white french provencial bed and dresser. My headboard wall was the accent wall, it was wallpapered with Ballerina's.:( I remember wishing they were clowns. I was a tom boy, and as graceful as a bull in a china cabinet;)

When I was three I got my own bedroom--my parents added three large bedrooms and a bathroom to our house right before my younger brother was born. My room was 15 X 15--huge for a kid's room. I had a maple bedroom set that was originally my father's maiden aunt's. She bought new furniture and gave me her old set. That meant I went from sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a double bed! For most of my childhood, my bedroom was various shades of pink with a white ceiling, and I had a white chenille bedspread with a multicolored floral medallion in the center, and smaller groups of flowers on it too. I had a small roll top desk and chair, an oak rocking chair, a bookcase and toy chest, a dresser and highboy, and dozens of dolls on the bed, the shelves, on top of the toy chest, and even on top of the desk! The thing I liked best about my room was that it had two windows, built into the corner--it was on the end of the house so I had two outside walls. Because of the location of the windows, and the size of the room, I could put the double bed on three out of the four walls. And I did just that. My mother and I would rearrange the furniture at least every six months. 50 years ago, my room changed dramatically from a doll display room to a Beatles shrine. I had posters on the walls, the ceiling, the door, and Beatle pillows, dolls, and even stacks of Beatle cards. We sold that house in 1969, at which point I was outgrowing that sort of décor. I loved that room, and I think having a mother who indulged my desire to decorate and redecorate made me interested in home décor for the rest of my life. Thanks, Mom!

I grew up in a OLD house with a clever mother and not much decorating funding. Simple linen pattern wallpaper in pale lavender (super sale from Sears), painted the horrid wood floors pale grey. Mom went to our small town plumber and had him make a U shape pipe rod she used to hang floor to ceiling white net "curtains" she made that ran all around the bed, looped and tied back at the corners with ribbon. A silky pale blue, white and lavender comforter (another super sale find). I always envied my friend Jane, the doctor's daughter, whose brand new house had all built-ins as part of her room--like from Seventeen magazine. Decades later, at a class reunion, she told me she always loved MY room, and did the same thing for her daughter. I made sure to tell my mom! Made her day.

Even though this post is OLD, it is fun to reminisce. I had a fairly large bedroom painted lavender and a French provincial style bed. Along one wall there was a very long white mcm built-in that included a desk, deep drawers, and (my favourite) a laundry chute that we would jump down when there were clothes in the bin below. My closet was a step up (we lived in a side split) and had a long cedar closet which was one of many "secret spaces" in the house and was our hiding place from my big brother. If I left a mess, my mother would dump everything onto my bed supposedly so I would have to clean it up to get into bed. I just dumped it back on the floor (still messy). I loved that room but, when I had my first daughter, I painted her room the brightest yellow possible. I used to joke that you didn't have to turn the light on even in the evening. Still love yellow and it is throughout much of my house (though as bright). Also have lavender accents. My life's colour scheme, I guess.

Should read "not as bright" and cedar closet was behind my regular closet. Smelled great.
