Oh, wonderful Houzzers:

I'm trying to pull my new living room together, and I am stumped. Let me tell you what I'm going for, and maybe you can help me get there?

Our living room is in the NE corner of the house; as you walk in the front door, turn right and you're in the LR, left and you're in the DR, straight and you are headed for the kitchen or up the stairs. In other words, the LR opens up to the DR, and despite its many windows, doesn't get a ton of light.

I want something elegant but bold that shows off my 1920s black glass collection. I'm thinking something Art Deco/Hollywood Regency (a new term I learned on Houzz!). I'm not afraid of color.

I painted it SW Northlight, hoping for a cool silvery-gray that would neutralize the many yellow-brown tones of the woodwork and carpet. It came out more blue than gray. I chose SW Nasturtium (the gold color) from this great print of an old Life Magazine cover from the 20s, thinking this would be my exciting accent color. I also thought I would warm it up with some touches of deep purple (my black glass, when held to the light, is actually purple).

Instead, the room looks rather washed out and clunky. Also, the brown furniture is not working, but I'm stuck with it for another six months at least. So I need to work around it.

Things I love about the room: The curtains. The piano. The Life Magazine print. My black glass in general, but maybe not the placement.

Things I'm not crazy about but have to stay: The wall color (can't afford to repaint just now, and I painted the DR SW Storm Cloud, which is the same color but deeper, and it looks fantastic in there). The sofa, carpet, and wingback chair.

Things that I can ditch: The lamps? The accent colors? The furniture placement?

One note: The piano has to stay against that wall for logistical reasons. It can't be on the exterior walls (bad for pianos) and if it were under the stairs, it would block a vent (also bad). I guess I could turn it 90 degrees and stick it in the corner, but that's where the cable comes out of the wall and seems a natural place for the TV.

I dunno…Thoughts? I'm really flummoxed. Maybe I should ditch the gold and purple and go toward a more peacock blue/teal combo? Play up the blue in the walls rather than fight it?

Should I just buy a bunch of peacocks and let them loose in the room? They'd probably be tidier than my children.
