Need HELP for color/style of an area rug for new home office!

I have been driven crazy on what colors and style of rug to put into this space. The chairs came first and I love them. I need to bring in another color to the room, be it green, blue or ? Built in cabinets are white with an ammeretto glaze, desk is black with wooden top, side table espresso and then a white cabinet on the back left. shutters on windows are white too. this was the living room and the dining room is on the opposite side divided by foyer. pictures should show all. if anyone needs additional pics to aid in helping me! I'll be happy to take more. appreciate all ideas as I'm not afraid of anything, Thanks!

Jennifer you hit the French casino on the head! greenish, bluish and reddish (by my screen colors) sing to me. Now to find a rug with the colors in my size and budget I will search. Thank you!

to all of you...this is my first submission to houzz and I am overwhelmed by each of you that has responded with your help, opinions, compliments and the time you have taken to do so, truly ! Thank you so much!!!! As soon as I find this rug you all will be the first to know.

I don't know if other houzzers have the same problem as I do but when I click on the link given by Jennifer about the french casino, it brings me to this site:
    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/home-and-garden-discussions-dsbr0-bd~( https://www.devinecolor.com/collections/french-casino

I don't know where to look on this page to see the french casino colors. marylizzieb can you post the colors that appeal to you so we can help you looking for a rug?
this was the palette for French casino colors. I would probably stick with the greenish and or bluish.

Don't limit yourself to an area carpet - the color could be brought in through a variety of sources. The key is to pull a color or two through both rooms. Attaching a few pictures of neutral rooms with splashes of color. One way that is a bit different, and not for everyone, is by adding color to the ceiling. My house has a purple taupe color on all the ceilings as the means to tie all the room colors together.

Marylizzy, your office space is beautiful!!

How about an area rug with an undertone of cool hues?

    Here are some examples:

How about a zebra pattern rug? That would add some zing!

Lori...I am trying to add a little spice to the room, it is too safe at this point. here is a picture of the fabric on the dining room chairs, rooms divided by foyer, see other pics. Now what do you think of this wild rug?
Grover...you rock, throw this rug under the pic of office and you may change my mind. the other 4 just done work for me right now but I truly appreciate you doing all that work. Thank you!

So this rug has the same accent colors that you have on the seat cushions and the foyer rug? What's not to love. Sounds like a perfect way to tie the three spaces together. Have you ever been able to figure out why you haven't like the other rugs? If they were too much like your neutrals, or just one accent color, then maybe this is what you have been striving for all this time - a way to include the accent palette you love.

There is one detail that may throw you, if I'm seeing colors correctly on my monitor. The rugs have black as an accent. The pillows on the office chairs are brown and it looks as if the background on the dining chair cushions is also more towards the browns than black....is it something like this small detail that is throwing you?

groveraxle, I am jealous on how a good job you can do of removing parts of the image and how clean you do it around objects like, for example, you can see how poor job I did around the legs of the chairs. Are you using the magic wand on photshop or do you have a tip for me or to do as good as you do?

marylizzieb, I think the rug above is beautiful. I will let groveraxle do the photoshop because she does it a lot better than I.
Oops when I say the rug above I mean the rug that you posted.
what!! suzanne_m you don't like my choice of rug ;-) ?
anne dee, it is a nice one but I really admire marylizzieb wanting to go wild! I thought a little encouragement would not hurt :)
true...it's a bit on the wild side!!
I love the rug you picked! Now if you can find a picture for the wall with the same colors you will be off and running.

Sorry, I'm tardy. Here's The Rug:

suzanne_m, I cut the furniture out by hand. I only use the magic wand when there's enough contrast between object and background to get a clean image.
When you say by hand, do you use the round shape eraser?

love you all for the comments. New day and need to calm myself down on this red/black multi rug. the room needs a pop of color for sure and this has it, possibly over the top, but the comment of go bold or go home is indeed pushing me on this. thank you all!

Grover you bowl me over, thank you again for taking the time to do the new pic of that rug in the room!
Can anyone tell me what the rule of thumb is for picking out rug size to put under furniture? Overhang or no?

you could add that extra punch you are looking for by changing the pillows on the slipper chairs to something more colorful that would coordinate with the chairs in the DR

the empty wall space on the right would be a good place for wall art for that added pop of colour

Great thing about a neutral room is you can add color with accents or add a rug with color as your accent. Love the room!
@suzanne_m, I cut the furniture out with the lasso selection tool. I then copy and paste it into a new layer. Then I can insert a rug between the furniture and the background layer.
Thank you groveraxle, I will try that.
the same patterned rug in blue/green, think this will work better and I will change the dining room chair fabric once it comes in. will send pics after it arrives. thanks again for everyone's help! I am just amazed with all of you!

Where did you find the rug? It is lovely - in both color combinations!
catie ...found at overstock. com. search for Charlotte rug and you will find, please don't buy all of them as I can't order till end of next week..haha

Just in case, groveraxle is going on on a Friday night an can't do the photoshop soon, here it is:

Love the blue multi rug!! 2 new pillows for slipper chairs and mayb a piece of art glass on bookshelf to tie in the rug colors - love your house
  • 12 years ago
I think this rug idea (stripe) picking up the colors from the DR chairs would look nice and not compete with them as the paisley appears to do.
Suzanne...excellent job on the new rug in photo..thanks!

des1gnchick....yep pillows got to go and I was at homegoods today looking for new things for open bookcases, will wait till rug gets here..thank you!

Anne...I will find new fabric for dining room chairs, I just did them but can truly say I'm just so so about that fabric. easy fix if I can find something with the colors of the new rug. the stripe doesn't feel like me for now. thank you!

Marylizzieb - no worries about my buying them up. Was impressed with the style and wondered who sold them.

Can't wait to see the finished room.

Are you excited about the blue paisley? You should be!
catie, I was just kidding on buying up all the rugs. I think the blue green version is much better than the red black one. we shall see when it arrives..I'm so tired of shopping for this thing. then I'll work on the big wall.

I totally got that you were teasing, my comments were said with my best i'm-really-old-this-is-my-most-loving-voice......but I haven't found the right emotion for that. ;-)

I think you've made some lovely choices and envy your design aesthetic. I really can't wait to see how it turns out.

the rug arrived! prelim photo for now and will get it more in shape tomorrow with day light and take a few more with things tidied up. Oh, and that is Isabella in the middle of it, she couldn't wait to put her little paws all over it.
Isabella is giving her paw of approval.....and I am agreeing with her!!!

I love what you have done in looking at the adjacent dining area and if you want some pop use the orange that you have as accents in the dining area to carry through the colors

I still tweak things a little but this is pretty much how the office has ended up. Thanks to all of you who spoke, worked photos for me to view and just speaking your thoughts. I'm happy with it and actually get work done some days. Hope your summer has been fantastic!
