A $5k budget does not afford a finished studio in the 170 - 320 square foot range that most people would be happy with or comfortable working in. Can you give us an idea of your expectations for finish materials (inside and out), size, type and location of windows, construction methods, heating and cooling needs, anticipated permit fees, electrical requirements....?

I would say a modified shed would be in order. I've investigated many of the small studio plans and modern cubicle designs however, some are way too out of the range. I'd compromise and maybe go up to 6-7K, but not further. I'm thinking insulated subflooring, flooring over that, walls finished with flooring placed on the diagonal or horizontally. Unfinished rafters on the ceiling. Electrical is necessary so I can use the Eden Pure heater in winter and in summer, the portable Haier air conditioner. One large skylight facing north and french glass doors. to allow more light to enter. The exterior would be basic materials, maybe cedar or whatever came with a kit and of course I would place the shed on a concrete slab to prevent shifting, which I've priced out at an additional $1,700 to pour. Permit fees may apply (about $100) depending on the dimensions of the structure. Much of the structure can be erected with help from family members, but I am looking at the cost comparison to have some just build and drop it in the back yard, but that means I'll have to take down a whole section of fence and then have someone come back and put it back up. Yikes
