That is definitely a classic 50s bathroom! My opinion would be to work with what you've got. Paint the walls above the tile bright white, white shower curtain, white window curtains, etc. That will really brighten the space up. The vanity doesn't look original though. It's hard to tell. Going with a pedastal sink would you more space. Putting in a pocket door would help with the awkward layout. People are nuts about these classic bathrooms. It would be a shame to see it gutted.

Looks like the first thing you need to do is replace your shower curtain. I like the green tile, here is a suggestion:

It is mostly green really, except for the tub. white or grey would tone it down a lot, and a bathmat would cover most of the floor, and you already have a grey countertop and a white toilet. Maybe a plain green or striped or even plaid shower curtain to match the tile would put the pink in the background. I have had 4 pink bathrooms over the years, and even though I was a pink hater back when, it has grown on me! Have fun with some vintage ads and accessories.

This color combo of pale pastels can actually look quite elegant--I have something sort of like it in my dining room--very retro. The pink you have is actually in the range of a light terra cotta, and you can pick it up with coral, not pink tones. I've included some period renderings, which can be pretty over the top.

ironic? Pepto Bismol pink for the bathroom. What a combo!

You don’t say what your budget it or how much you are willing to do.

I would work with the green. It is not bad. Stay away from a lot of pink. I think wallpaper would help and if it has a coordinating fabric that would be good for the shower curtain.

It is going to be expensive to tear the whole thing out. If you really hate the pink, consider just replacing or resurfacing the pink tub. Looks like you are replacing the sink, so that will make a difference too. Then you will only have a bit of ballet slipper pink accent, and a floor largely covered with a bath mat. It isn't anything close to pepto bismol pink--just call it light terra cotta or peach if you have a mental block about pink!

Agree that you need to work out the door swing or put in a pocket or sliding door in. and it is awfully tight with the linen closet (?)) You will need a narrow or custom cabinet to fit.

BTW, that floor is a mud job and probably has an inch or more of mortar under it, and new tile won't come close to the quality. It is a huge mess and difficult to take up too. Be sure to factor that into your plans. Old porcelain tubs are expensive to replace as well.

Otherwise, plan on being without a bath for some time and spending more money than you think. Is it really worth all that time and expense right now, or would you rather put the money into landscaping, kitchen appliances or bigger closets?

The tub and tile is all original 1950. Unfortunately, I don't have a before picture. But, the white wall paint used to be a deep dark red, which was terrible. The previous owners ripped out the what i'm assuming was a pedastal or wall mounted sink and replaced it with a cheap plastic vanity from Lowe's. I plan on replacing it with a porcelain pedastal sink to restore it to it's original look. They also ripped out the built in medicine cabinet :( I could kill them for that. If you do gut your bathroom, (it will make me cry), but at least save the original pieces! Salvage them! Some people are desparately looking for those pieces!

Lovelycee- Should you get to the place where you've had it with the pink tub, let me share an old builder's trick (from an old builder) about getting it out of there. Hit the apron of the tub several times with a sledgehammer and remove the tub in pieces. Those old tubs are almost always cast iron and we've removed many of them in rather large chunks. Ripley's Believe It Or Not, they really come out rather easily! Good luck on your bathroom.

thanks for the tips guys...I the sink is pink too and there is a long darker green counter next to it...I want a neutral color paint..nice tiles on walls and floor..new tub, sink and probably toilet too since its beige and the new tub and sink would be white...about how much am I looking at? im really just trying to price it right now..

also the space behind the door is just a wall with a chute...so it is the back of the adjacent closet..the closet door opening is in the room next to the bathroom

I realize that you don't like the pink, but posted the link above to show you how crazy some people are about this stuff. :) You can always paint your tub too.

I am the first one to champion restoration, and I love 50s pink bathrooms, but honestly, I don't think this one is worth saving. I'm not sure I could stand to wash my hands over that vanity. Gut it and start over.

lovelycee, the only way you'll get a price is to design and spec your new bathroom and then call some contractors in for bids. Too many variables to get a price online. You'll minimize your costs by not changing any of the fixture placements, and you don't have to choose the most expensive materials, but your major cost will be labor anyway.

So find your favorite bathroom on houzz, and then one you can live with, call some contractors and get some bids.

Liz you are right..these people are going crazy for what im trying to get rid..and when I look at their newly design bathrooms will my stuff..I dont like them and people are saying its beautiful...in fact a man has my same exact pattern tile floor on his floor and he called it delicious...I want a more neutral bathroom...looks like I will be rolling up my sleeves for some do it itself work..because im dont like the retro renovation look at all...thank u guys so much for your suggestions
