I love painted brick ;) As far as accent colors...anything blue or bluish grey will accent the "orangeness" of the brick. Reds would probably clash. Your best bet might be a deep green/grey.

I don't know if I could be the one to paint brick, because I hear the same things about keeping it, but I always love painted brick. That probably sounds crazy. :)

Painting brick is taking a Maintenance-Free material and turning it into something that has to be repainted every few years. Do you really want to look forward to getting the house repainted when you're in your 60's and 70's?

Instead, look at repainting/replacing your trimwork, doors and windows with a super-dark color - Perhaps Dark Brown, Dark Green or even Black?

Look into brick stain. As mentioned above, painting brick turns it into a maintenance headache.

I had a horrible brick color once...kind of a beige, brown, orange combo color..hate to say but it reminded me of vomit. Sorry. No better way to put it. I had a very good decorator help me with the house, and I told her how bad I hated the brick. She picked a paint color (and I disliked the color she chose...kind of a tan but with a hint of mustard...would have NEVER picked it) but I went with her advise, and it was magic. Toned down the brick and made the brick something I actually would have chosen had I seen it together. I would have never thought a paint color on the trim could alter brick color the way it did. But I think you need a very experienced design professional to get just the right tone. It will be worth his/her consultation fee. Also, I talked with a brick person (thought about rebricking or veneering...and he suggested painting or staining as a cheaper option..and said the paint they use now is less maintenance than what used to be used. Don't know anymore about painting brick, since we didn't proceed that way, but there are better "brick paint products" than there used to be. One more thing (sorry to be wordy) ..drive down streets and look "specifically" for your brick color on other houses. I say specifically because you will miss them if they have a good trim color and the house looks good. You only notice ugly brick when it's ugly....when it looks good, you don't say "hey! that's our orange!" If you live in a town with averaged sized neighborhoods...you'll find a few homes with your orange..and check out their trim color. We were looking for a home in a town with old houses (70's-80's era) and disliked the brick colors on all of the homes for sale, and we started just looking at other houses as we drove around the town...and many had the same brick as the for sale houses, but their trim was different and the house had an entirely different look that was pleasing to the eye.
