What is the average cost/sq foot to install as a countertop with an square edge? I was quoted material costs of $28/sq ft for honed Calacatta Vena (which I expected), but then $95/sq foot to install my kitchen. I was blown away at that number. I would appreciate any info you could give me to compare. I really love this product!!

Prices for fabricating countertops out of porcelain panels can vary a good bit from project to project, so comparisons can be misleading. Factors that affect price can include how many edges are being fabricated, access to the job site (a house on the ground floor vs. a penthouse, for example), and region. We are located in Atlanta, and generally construction rates in the South can be lower than, say, the Northeast.
That being said our fabricators are quoting $65/sf installed (including material). If a job was very complex with a lot of angles, that could be a bit higher. If you'd like to email me at ademers@specialtytile.com, I can get specific details about your project and better assist you with details.

I spoke to a local supplier who said that the edge of this material will often times deter people from using it as a kitchen countertops. Do you know what he is talking about?

Hi Sara, thanks for your comment. Of course this is ultimately a matter of personal preference, but we don't find that to be a problem for our customers.
The edges of the material are fabricated into an edge that ends up looking like a 2" slab edge by mitering a long strip down the side. Here are some examples:
The porcelain panels are wrapped around a product such as this:

which comes in 2" thicknesses.
Of course you will have a seam along the edge, but when it's well executed this is not noticeable at all. The only real limitation is a curved edge, which at this time cannot be reproduced with Plane. Let me know if we can answer anymore questions!

Will this material work outside as a countertop, withstanding freeze and thaw? Any exterior issues?

Hi Lisa,

This material is porcelain, and therefore has almost no porosity. This makes it ideal for installation outdoors in an environment with freeze/thaw cycles. These slabs often get used for outdoor kitchens and BBQs.
