It is a beautiful arrangement, and is indeed a Japanese maple. I am unsure about your area, as I am in the Deep South, and it's too warm for them here. Google planting zones for them.

Thanks! It is a Japanese Maple and the cultivar is 'Bloodgood'. Japanese Maples are not truly hardy in zone 4, but if you place them on the south side or southwest side of the house they should survive the winters for 5-7 years. One of the only examples we know of that a Japanese Maple was truly hardy was in between two houses in the city that were about 15' apart. This alley between the houses created a micro-climate that has allowed the maple to reach 20' tall.
