If you choose a black or very dark gray/charcoal material and do it in a honed finish instead of polished, it can look a bit like soapstone.

any particular color you would recommend? I have most of the Silestone samples...I just don't really know what soapstone is supposed to look like since it isn't really popular in my part of the world :-) Thanks

if you look on my profile page, the Sag Harbor NY kitchen has soapstone. Those are freshly oiled…its usually a bit duller. If you took chemistry in high school…the chemistry lab had soapstone counters.

I had a client who wanted it but could not afford it, so I did some kind of black granite that had almost no variation in it (can't remember name), and I did it honed. It looked pretty spectacular, and reminded me of the real thing. Only drawback was it shows everything…especially handprints. I warned her ahead of time…but she was willing to have the trade off.

Soapstone is so fantastic…something about the way it feels and looks in person. If you can possibly find a slab…it's worth the wait.

I was at Da Vinci Marble today in San Carlos, CA, Ph: 650-595-2500 They have Virginia Mist and I bet through their system they could identify who has it for you locally or have it sent to you. Its inexpensive and It is bullet proof unlike soapstone. There are very helpful and have a great reputation for stone and marble with one of the largest selections around.

I fell in love with the Charcoal Soapstone... Lowes had a sample of it. Turns out its an "exclusive" color to Home Depot... normally not a big deal but i have 1200 worth of cash back rewards that i wanted to use on the countertops. Anyone can confirm that or did i just have a really lazy salesman?
