I think that it looks alright, but I think I would have gone with a "tighter" pattern and more light colors. Here is a suggestion that may work:

The wall color is making the bricks scream "look at me!" :)

I think an ice cream shade on the wall may help take your eyes off the bricks on the fireplace and make the room seem more elegant.. Just a thought and would work well

I agree with you @ ryaninns, the rug looks a little out of place in the room. I would keep looking.

Have you considered painting the brick on the fire place?

I love it! Adds a bit of contemporary to an otherwise very traditional room! But you do need a coffee table.

If you love the rug and sofa, then paint will be a cheap fix for the of the room and FP. Maybe you can paint the brick black.

I also have a brick insert in my fireplace which was red just like yours. What I did for a instant inexpensive quick change was not paint the brick but used a black stain. The kind of stain you use on wood. The stain seeps into the brick, changes the color and leaves a natural matt finish. It will better coordinate with your new rug if you decide to keep it.

I would look for a more transitional pattern, not so contemporary. Also, I think you need a lighter color in the rug to play off your dark floor and fireplace.

The rug is great. The brick color on the fireplace could work with an echo of a rich brick red in pillows and a tribal influence throw -- I like the idea of staining the brick or covering it with an artisan tile. Brick always gives too much fussy pattern with all those mortar lines. The contrast of the mantle and the walls is too strong. That mantle is always going to fight you in bright white - if you love the wall color, continue it on the mantle. Clearly you are trying to distract from the mantle with all of the decorative items you have put there. Wall art would tie it all together and bring in more light and rich colors.

You asked specifically about the rug and the fireplace. Both look fine together. I like the brick and wall color too. No need to change anything! Just enjoy your space.

Thank you to everyone who has commented. All your comments are very insightful and will help us finalize our living room space. We just bought our home and the wall color will be changed to a much lighter color and we are still in the process of buying furniture and wall decor. Once we nail down our rug then we will move to the finishing touches.

Also, we decided to take back the rug and purchase a more traditional one (definitely a tough decision), and we will post a follow up when we find it.

I look forward to seeing your updates. There are some things you can do with the fireplace to "modernize" it a bit as well, once you see how the rest is working out.

I would rethink the rug...it is clashing with your fireplace...unless you would paint your bricks or reface them...is it worth keeping the rug?

Look for deep rich tones in a small muted traditional print.

i really like the rug but you must change fireplace in order to keep it.
